In a heartbreaking incident, several people have been killed and many others injured after a devastating blaze engulfed a crowded bar in the luxury Alpine ski resort town of Crans Montana, according to Swiss police reports. The fire broke out around 1:30 AM local time (00:30 GMT) this morning at a popular venue known as ‘Le Constellation’, as revelers celebrated the New Year, police spokesperson Gaetan Lathion confirmed on Thursday.
Authorities reported that over a hundred people were inside the building at the time of the fire, leading to numerous injuries and fatalities. While police have not officially confirmed the exact number of casualties, sources indicate that at least 10 individuals have lost their lives, with local media suggesting that the toll may be higher. Many victims are being treated for serious burns.
Initially, there were reports of an explosion; however, a police statement later described the incident as “a fire of undetermined origin.” Eyewitness accounts and images shared by Swiss media depicted a building engulfed in flames, prompting a swift and extensive emergency response. “A major emergency response is underway,” the police statement noted, emphasizing that a large contingent of police, firefighters, and rescue workers quickly arrived to assist the numerous victims.
A medical source informed the national broadcaster RTS that hospitals across French-speaking Switzerland are currently overwhelmed with burn victims as a result of the fire. Several hours after the incident, an AFP photographer reported seeing multiple ambulances transporting injured individuals from Crans Montana.
Located in the heart of the Swiss Alps, just 40 kilometers (25 miles) north of the iconic Matterhorn, Crans Montana is renowned as an international ski resort attracting tourists from around the globe. “This is an internationally renowned ski resort with lots of tourists,” Lathion remarked, highlighting the area's popularity.
In light of the tragedy, a reception center and helpline have been established to support impacted families. The area surrounding the incident has been completely closed off to ensure safety, and a no-fly zone has been imposed over Crans Montana, as stated in the police announcement. “The intervention is still ongoing,” Lathion added, indicating that efforts to manage the situation are continuing.
