In a shocking escalation of hostilities, Russia has launched its largest drone attack on Ukraine since the onset of its invasion, resulting in the tragic death of at least one civilian. This incident unfolded on Wednesday, just hours after US President Donald Trump reaffirmed his commitment to providing military support to Kyiv, while also criticizing Russian President Vladimir Putin for his insincerity during peace negotiations.
The massive aerial assault involved a staggering total of 728 drones and 13 missiles, as reported by Ukraine’s Air Force. This operation set a new record, surpassing the previous high of 539 drones launched on July 4 by a significant margin. Fortunately, despite the scale of the attack, it was largely repelled, limiting the damage inflicted on Ukrainian infrastructure and civilians. Tragically, one civilian in the western district of Khmelnytskyi succumbed to injuries caused by debris from a Shahed drone, according to local authorities.
Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky took to Telegram, describing the attack as a "demonstrative" act by Russia amid ongoing attempts to broker peace and ceasefire agreements. He stated, “Russia rejects everything,” and emphasized that partners of Ukraine must act decisively to compel Russia to reconsider its aggressive stance. “Everyone who wants peace must act,” he urged.
The barrage primarily targeted the city of Lutsk, located in northwestern Ukraine. The intensity of the assault was such that it prompted Poland to scramble its military aircraft to secure its airspace. Ivan Rudnitskyi, the head of the military administration in the Volyn region, reported on Telegram, “Last night, our region was again subjected to a mass attack. Virtually everything was flying towards Lutsk.” Thankfully, Ukraine’s Air Force claimed to have intercepted and destroyed 718 drones, minimizing potential casualties.
The attack comes on the heels of President Trump’s remarks regarding the necessity of increased military support for Ukraine. Following a tumultuous 48 hours in the White House, Trump expressed his frustration over Putin's lack of commitment to peace talks, stating, “We get a lot of bullsh*t thrown at us by Putin.” On Monday, Trump pledged to restore military aid to Ukraine, particularly emphasizing the urgent need for US-made Patriot interceptor missiles to bolster Ukraine’s defense against ongoing Russian strikes.
In parallel, Germany’s Chancellor announced that Berlin would maintain its support for Ukraine, asserting that diplomatic efforts to resolve the conflict had been exhausted. “If a criminal regime, with military violence, openly questions the existential right of an entire country, my government will do everything in its power to prevent this,” stated Friedrich Merz during a parliamentary session.
In a landmark ruling on Wednesday, Europe’s top human rights court found that Russia had committed significant violations of international law in Ukraine since the full-scale invasion began in February 2022. The court’s decision stemmed from inter-state cases filed by Ukraine and the Netherlands against Russia. Additionally, Ukraine reported the arrest of two Chinese nationals accused of espionage, allegedly attempting to gather intelligence on the production of Kyiv’s Neptune missile systems.
