The university issued an urgent active shooter alert on its official website at approximately 4:30 p.m. According to NBC10, the alert warned: “Police on scene. Move to secure location. Lock/barricade doors. More info to follow. Stay Clear of Law School Scarpa Hall. ACTIVE SHOOTER on VU campus.” This message prompted immediate concern among students and staff, leading them to follow safety protocols.
Initially, reports regarding injuries were conflicting. The Philadelphia Inquirer had indicated that one person had been shot; however, a police source informed NBC10 around 5:30 p.m. that no injuries were connected to the incident. By 6 p.m., Radnor Township Police confirmed that law enforcement units were still in the process of clearing buildings, reiterating that there were no victims injured during the incident.
In response to the situation, Radnor Township Police issued an alert on social media platform X, urging individuals to shelter in place. The university subsequently updated its alert with additional information, advising, “Police continue to search area. Remain sheltered in place until further notice,” and again advising to “Stay Clear of Law School Scarpa Hall.” The quick response from local authorities, including Pennsylvania State Police and federal law enforcement agencies, helped to ensure the safety of the community.
This incident occurred on a day marked by significance for the university, as Thursday, August 21, was the first day of New Student Orientation and Registration. Villanova University, which boasts an enrollment of 6,700 full-time undergraduate students along with 3,100 graduate and law students, had been hosting a picnic celebrating the class of 2028 just hours before the alert was issued.
