On Monday morning, a devastating shooting incident occurred outside the Grand Sierra Resort and Casino in Reno, Nevada, resulting in the loss of three lives and several injuries. According to officials, the gunfire erupted around 7:25 a.m. in the valet area, prompting an immediate response from law enforcement.
During a press conference held on Monday afternoon, Reno Police Chief Kathryn Nance provided crucial updates on the situation. A total of six victims suffered gunshot wounds, with three individuals tragically succumbing to their injuries. Among the injured, two remain in critical condition at a local hospital, while a third victim has since been released.
The suspect, described as an adult male, was apprehended within minutes of the shooting. Authorities reported that he was taken to a hospital following an officer-involved shooting. The incident began when the unidentified suspect entered the parking lot and valet area of the resort, brandishing a handgun. Initially, the weapon malfunctioned; however, once it became operable, he opened fire on the victims.
According to police reports, five individuals were shot at the valet stand, where one was pronounced dead at the scene. Another individual in the valet area later succumbed to their injuries. Tragically, an additional victim, who was driving through the parking lot, was also shot and killed by the suspect in what appears to be a random act of violence. This victim was declared dead on site as well.
Reno Mayor Hillary Schieve expressed her condolences, stating, "My heart goes out to everyone who has been impacted by this tragic shooting incident." She acknowledged the bravery of first responders and medical personnel, emphasizing their courageous efforts during such a harrowing event. Mayor Schieve also extended her thoughts to the staff of the Grand Sierra Resort, the guests, and anyone else affected by the incident.
Officials have indicated that there is currently no known connection between the gunman and the victims, and an investigation into the shooting is actively underway.
