A student has tragically died and another is currently in a stable but critical condition following a shooting incident at Kentucky State University (KSU), according to officials. The shooting occurred on the university campus in Frankfort, prompting a swift response from local law enforcement.
Authorities confirmed that a suspect is in custody after the shooting, which took place in a residence hall on the south side of the KSU campus. In response to the active aggressor situation, KSU was placed on lockdown on Tuesday afternoon as police worked to secure the area.
Kentucky Governor Andy Beshear addressed the situation, noting that the campus shooting appears to be an isolated incident rather than a mass shooting. He expressed his condolences on social media, stating, "Violence has no place in our commonwealth or country. Let's please pray for the families affected and for our KSU students. Let's also pray for a world where these things don't happen." Governor Beshear also commended the swift actions of law enforcement.
The Frankfort Police Department, along with KSU campus police and the Franklin County Sheriff's Office, responded quickly to the shooting incident. Law enforcement assured the public in a Facebook post that they had secured the campus and apprehended the suspect.
Out of respect for the students involved and their families, KSU has decided not to release any identifying information or additional medical details at this time. The university stated on its official website, "We are in close contact with the families and are providing every available support to them." KSU is also offering counseling and support services to students, faculty, and staff who may be affected by this tragic event.
Kentucky State University spans approximately 1,000 acres and serves more than 2,200 students and 450 faculty and staff members. The university is committed to ensuring the safety and well-being of its community, especially during such challenging times.
