A second detainee has tragically died following a shooting incident at the Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) facility in Dallas last week. According to both ICE and a spokesperson for the League of United Latin American Citizens (LULAC), Miguel Ángel García-Hernández, aged 32, succumbed to his injuries after being removed from life support. This heartbreaking news was confirmed in a statement released by LULAC, which cited García-Hernández's wife, Stephany Gauffeny.
ICE officials confirmed to NBC News that García-Hernández passed away at 12:48 a.m. Central Time on Monday. The senior official from the Department of Homeland Security (DHS), who is knowledgeable about the details of the case, revealed that García-Hernández, originally from Mexico, was one of three detainees shot during the incident on September 24. In a related statement made on Monday, ICE also confirmed the death of another victim, Norlan Guzmán-Fuente, a 37-year-old from El Salvador who had entered the United States illegally.
According to the DHS official, another victim identified in the shooting was Jose Andres Bordones-Molina from Venezuela; however, specifics regarding his injuries were not disclosed. Fortunately, Dallas police reported that no ICE officers sustained injuries during the event. The shooter, identified as Joshua Jahn, was found deceased at the scene from a self-inflicted gunshot wound, as per reports from multiple senior law enforcement officials involved in the investigation.
In her heartfelt statement, Gauffeny described her husband as a “good man, a loving father, and the provider for our family.” She expressed her devastation, stating, “We had just bought our first home together, and he worked hard every single day to make sure our children had what they needed. His death is a senseless tragedy that has left our family shattered. I do not know how to explain to our children that their father is gone.” This statement emphasizes the profound impact of the tragedy on the family.
LULAC's statement further highlighted that García-Hernández and Gauffeny were expecting their fifth child and had recently moved into their first home, marking a new chapter in their lives that has now been overshadowed by this horrific event.
The DHS released a statement detailing the events that unfolded when officers arrived at the ICE Dallas Field Office, where they “encountered an active shooter at the facility, targeting immigration officials.” As per established protocol, ICE has notified the DHS, the Office of the Inspector General, and the ICE Office of Professional Responsibility regarding the incident. This response underscores the seriousness of the situation and the ongoing efforts to investigate the circumstances surrounding this tragic shooting.
