In a heartbreaking turn of events, four individuals, including children, lost their lives and several others sustained injuries when a vehicle crashed into a building used by the YNOT After School Camp in Chatham, Illinois. The victims, whose ages range from four to 18 years, were enjoying activities at the camp when the incident occurred on a fateful Monday afternoon.
According to local police reports, the tragic accident transpired around 3:30 PM local time (21:30 BST). The vehicle initially struck multiple individuals outside the building, creating chaos as it then barreled through the structure, impacting several people inside before exiting out the opposite side. Authorities are still investigating whether the crash was an accident or deliberate.
Emergency services swiftly arrived on the scene, transporting several victims to nearby hospitals via ambulance and helicopter. The Illinois State Police confirmed that the driver of the vehicle was unharmed but was taken to the hospital for evaluation. Heartbreakingly, three of the deceased were struck outside the building, while one victim was tragically hit inside.
Online footage shared by witnesses showed significant damage to the building, with large holes visible where the vehicle crashed through.
