In a statement issued by US Steel, the company that operates the Clairton Coke Works plant, President and CEO David Burritt expressed the company's commitment to cooperating with authorities to determine the cause of the explosion. Burritt stated, “We are working closely with relevant authorities to investigate the cause of the incident and will provide additional updates as they become available.” He also highlighted the dedication of the nearly 1,300 employees at the Clairton Plant, emphasizing their commitment to safety during this challenging time. “During times like this, US Steel employees come together to extend their love, prayers, and support to everyone affected,” he added.

The explosion occurred around 11 AM local time. Local police have confirmed that at least one person has died, with two others still unaccounted for. Several workers have been hospitalized, and it is feared that the number of injuries may reach into the dozens. A search and rescue operation is currently in progress, with dramatic images showing thick black smoke rising from the significantly damaged plant. The Clairton plant is located approximately 15 miles south of Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania's second-largest city.In light of the explosion, the Allegheny County Health Department has advised residents living near the steel plant to take precautions. They recommend that individuals keep their windows closed and stay indoors due to the smoke billowing from the site. Local officials stated, “Out of an abundance of caution, residents within one mile of the plant are advised to remain indoors, close all windows and doors, set HVAC systems to recirculate, and avoid activities that draw in outside air, such as using exhaust fans.”
At present, officials have indicated that unsafe levels of air pollution have not been detected, and further updates will be provided as more information becomes available.
