Authorities have arrested a suspect in connection with the alarming shooting incident that occurred at the Sacramento ABC affiliate, KXTV (ABC10). Police officials confirmed the arrest on Saturday, following the shooting that took place on Friday afternoon. This incident has drawn significant attention, particularly as it unfolded just a day after a protest was staged outside the station regarding the network’s controversial suspension of the show Jimmy Kimmel Live!.
The suspect, identified as Anibal Hernandezsantana, a 64-year-old resident of Sacramento, faces multiple charges including assault with a deadly weapon, shooting into an occupied building, and negligent discharge of a firearm. The exact motive behind the shooting is still under investigation, leaving many questions unanswered.
According to Sacramento Police Officer Anthony Gamble, officers responded to reports of gunfire at the KXTV building shortly after 1:30 PM on Friday. Investigators learned that at least three gunshots had been fired from a passing vehicle, striking the lobby of the television station. Fortunately, there was a person present in the lobby during the incident, but they thankfully sustained no injuries. ABC News photos captured three bullet holes visible in the window of the building’s lobby.
Following the shooting, law enforcement was able to identify the vehicle involved, which led them to a residence in Sacramento. This prompt action resulted in the swift arrest of Hernandezsantana. He is currently being booked into the Sacramento County Main Jail as the investigation continues.
In a statement to ABC News, the owner of ABC10, Tegna, expressed their commitment to cooperation with law enforcement and outlined steps taken to enhance the safety of their employees. The station emphasizes the importance of a secure working environment, especially in light of recent events.
The protest that took place outside the KXTV building on Thursday was part of a larger series of demonstrations against ABC’s decision to suspend Jimmy Kimmel Live! following comments made by Kimmel about political figure Charlie Kirk. Similar protests occurred at other locations, including Disney studios in Burbank and Hollywood, where the show is filmed. Demonstrators in Sacramento displayed signs with messages such as “First Amendment,” “Resist,” and “You’re Next,” highlighting the tensions surrounding the network's actions.
As the situation unfolds, further discussions are anticipated regarding the future of Jimmy Kimmel Live!, with reports indicating that the crew is scheduled to be compensated next week while negotiations continue. Additionally, legal experts are weighing in on the implications of recent threats made by political figures concerning media networks, calling attention to the potential consequences of such actions.
The shooting incident at KXTV underscores the ongoing challenges faced by media outlets in navigating political discourse and public sentiment, making it a significant event for both local and national audiences.
