In a dramatic escalation of hostilities, Russia bombarded Ukraine’s second-largest city, Kharkiv, in the early hours of Saturday morning. This attack comes just one night after Moscow executed one of the most extensive aerial assaults of the ongoing war. The recent strikes are perceived as a direct response to a daring drone operation carried out by Kyiv, which successfully incapacitated over a third of Moscow’s strategic cruise missile carriers.
According to a Telegram post from Kharkiv's Mayor, Igor Terekhov, the northeastern city—located approximately 30 kilometers (19 miles) from the Russian border—was jolted by “at least 40 explosions.” The devastating onslaught resulted in the tragic loss of at least three lives and left more than a dozen individuals injured. Mayor Terekhov characterized this assault as “the most powerful attack since the start of the full-scale war,” emphasizing the severe threat posed to the city.
Mayor Terekhov expressed his deep concern, stating, “The enemy is striking simultaneously with missiles, drones, and guided aerial bombs. This is outright terror against peaceful Kharkiv.” Emergency services released harrowing footage showing a significant fire engulfing a multi-story apartment building in the Osnovyanskyi district, where two fatalities occurred. Additionally, a strike in the Kyivskyi district claimed the life of another individual.
Just a day prior to the Kharkiv attacks, Russia unleashed a wave of drones and ballistic missiles across various regions of Ukraine, which resulted in at least six fatalities and numerous injuries. This military response is widely interpreted as retaliation for Ukraine’s drone swarm that provoked Moscow. Former US President Donald Trump commented on the situation, stating, “They gave Putin a reason to go in and bomb the hell out of them last night.” Trump had previously warned that Russian retaliation was imminent after a conversation with Russian President Vladimir Putin.
As tensions continue to rise, it remains uncertain whether Putin plans to escalate Moscow's retaliatory actions further. Trump has expressed a desire to bring an end to the three-year conflict but has been hesitant to impose new sanctions on Russia while seeking a ceasefire agreement between the warring nations.
