On Tuesday afternoon, a significant explosion occurred at the Horizon Biofuels plant in Fremont, Nebraska, leaving three individuals unaccounted for. The incident took place around midday at the facility, which specializes in the production of fuel pellets and animal bedding. Horizon Biofuels is located approximately 40 miles northwest of Omaha.
Fremont Fire Chief Todd Bernt provided an update during a press briefing, stating, "When we arrived on scene, we had heavy smoke and a lot of flames coming out." The explosion caused a significant structural collapse within the plant, complicating rescue efforts. Chief Bernt noted that fire crews encountered challenges accessing the building due to mangled steel and debris. "We tried to get access early on, but just due to the collapse, we were unable to get inside," he explained.
As the fire continued to burn, especially in the facility's tower, Chief Bernt mentioned that fire crews would likely remain on-site for several days. The plant's storage of wood and alcohol-based materials has heightened concerns regarding safety during the search operations. In response to the situation, the fire department has enlisted the assistance of Nebraska Task Force One, which is currently assessing how to safely conduct a search for the missing individuals.
The cause of the explosion is still under investigation, with the Nebraska State Fire Marshal's Office and other agencies actively involved at the scene. Fremont Mayor Joey Spellerberg emphasized the collaborative response from multiple agencies, stating, "It's quite incredible to see the work, and we're doing everything we can with this situation." He further confirmed that three people were inside the plant at the time of the explosion but could not provide additional details.
Nebraska Governor Jim Pillen expressed his concern for those affected by the incident, stating, "Our thoughts and prayers are with all involved -- and we're ready to help any way we can." The governor is closely monitoring the situation as it develops.
In a demonstration of community spirit, one local woman brought water to first responders at the scene. She recounted witnessing a large black puff of smoke following the explosion and immediately began praying that no one was hurt. "That's all we can hope for. We're a good community. Everybody will rally together and help each other," she shared with reporters.
The explosion at the Horizon Biofuels plant has raised significant concerns regarding safety and the well-being of those unaccounted for. As investigations continue and fire crews work tirelessly, the community remains hopeful for a positive outcome.
