In the early hours of Saturday, a tragic incident occurred outside a popular East Hollywood nightclub, resulting in injuries to 30 individuals. Among the injured, seven people sustained critical injuries when a driver crashed into a crowd, highlighting the dangers of nightlife in bustling urban areas.
The incident took place around 2 a.m. when a gray Nissan Versa careened into a taco stand and a valet area, violently tossing patrons waiting outside the Vermont club into the air. Eyewitnesses reported the horrifying scene, where chaos erupted as people scrambled to safety amidst the wreckage.
Police reported that the driver of the vehicle was subsequently shot and pulled from the car by bystanders. He was taken to a nearby hospital along with 23 of the injured clubgoers. The current condition of the driver remains unknown, as investigations continue into the motives behind the reckless act. “When officers arrived, they found the driver had been assaulted by bystanders and determined he sustained a gunshot wound,” stated the police.
Authorities are actively investigating the circumstances surrounding this alarming event. The police indicated that the driver drove into the crowd “for reasons still under investigation.” They are examining whether the driver may have lost consciousness prior to the crash. Additionally, the suspect who shot the driver fled the scene on foot and was last seen heading westbound from Vermont Avenue.
The police have described the suspected gunman as a Latino male, approximately 5’9”, weighing around 180 pounds, and wearing a blue jersey. He is believed to be armed with a silver revolver, heightening concerns about public safety in the area.
The chaotic scene prompted an immediate response from emergency services, with around 124 firefighters and paramedics arriving to assist at the location on Santa Monica Boulevard. Mayor Karen Bass expressed her condolences and gratitude in a statement, saying, “This is a heartbreaking tragedy. I want to thank the more than 100 LAFD and LAPD personnel who responded to the scene to help save lives.”
