A powerful magnitude 7.6 earthquake has struck Japan, leading to urgent tsunami warnings and evacuation orders for residents in affected areas. The earthquake occurred offshore at 11:15 PM local time (2:15 PM GMT), as reported by the Japan Meteorological Agency (JMA). Following this seismic event, officials warned that a tsunami as high as 3 meters (10 feet) could impact the country’s northeastern coast.
Tsunami warnings were promptly issued for the prefectures of Hokkaido, Aomori, and Iwate. The JMA reported that tsunamis measuring between 20 to 50 cm (7 to 18 inches) have already been observed at several ports along the northeastern coastline. The epicenter of the quake was located approximately 50 miles (80 km) off the coast of Aomori prefecture, reaching a depth of 30 miles.
On Japan’s one-to-seven scale of seismic intensity, the tremor registered as an “upper six” in Aomori prefecture. This level of seismic activity is strong enough to make it nearly impossible for individuals to stand or move without crawling. Such tremors often result in significant damage, including the collapse of heavy furniture and damage to wall tiles and windowpanes in many buildings.
In response to the earthquake, the East Japan Railway has suspended some services in the affected areas. This region is still recovering from the devastating 9.0 magnitude earthquake that occurred in March 2011, which had catastrophic effects across Japan.
Despite the severity of the earthquake, no irregularities have been reported at nuclear power plants operated by Tohoku Electric Power and Hokkaido Electric Power. However, Tohoku Electric has reported that thousands of residents are currently without power due to the earthquake's impact.
Japan is renowned for being one of the world’s most earthquake-prone countries, experiencing a tremor at least every five minutes. Situated within the “Ring of Fire”—an area characterized by a high level of seismic activity due to its location around the Pacific Basin—Japan accounts for approximately 20% of the world’s earthquakes of magnitude 6.0 or higher.
As authorities continue to assess the situation and provide updates, residents are urged to stay informed and follow safety protocols. Further details will be provided as they become available.
