Air Canada has suspended all operations following a massive strike by over 10,000 flight attendants, which began early Saturday morning. This unexpected labor action has left travelers worldwide stranded during the peak summer travel season, causing significant disruptions in air travel.
The strike commenced shortly after a deadline for contract negotiations passed without resolution. Hugh Pouliot, a spokesman for the Canadian Union of Public Employees (CUPE), confirmed that the union opted to strike after rejecting Air Canada’s proposal for government-directed arbitration. This arbitration would have eliminated the union's right to strike and allowed a third party to dictate the terms of a new contract.
Flight attendants officially walked off the job around 1 a.m. EDT on Saturday, coinciding with Air Canada's announcement to begin locking flight attendants out of airports. The ongoing contract dispute has escalated tensions between the airline and the flight attendants’ union, severely impacting air travel for approximately 130,000 passengers daily. It is estimated that around 25,000 Canadians could be stranded abroad due to the strike.
In an attempt to mediate the situation, Federal Jobs Minister Patty Hajdu met with representatives from both Air Canada and the union on Friday night. Hajdu expressed frustration over the lack of progress in negotiations, stating, “It is unacceptable that such little progress has been made. Canadians are counting on both parties to put forward their best efforts.”
Many passengers, like Montreal resident Alex Laroche, are feeling the brunt of this strike. Laroche and his girlfriend had been saving for their dream European vacation, only to find their $8,000 trip in jeopardy due to the cancellation of their flight to Nice, France. As they await updates from Air Canada, they are left in uncertainty regarding their travel plans.
Air Canada operates approximately 700 flights daily, and while passengers impacted by the strike can request full refunds via the airline's website or mobile app, there is no guarantee of immediate rebooking. The airline has mentioned that alternative travel options may be available through other Canadian and international airlines; however, due to the summer travel peak, many flights are already fully booked.
Air Canada and CUPE have been engaged in contract negotiations for about eight months, but significant differences remain, particularly regarding wages and unpaid work performed by flight attendants. The airline’s latest offer included a 38% increase in total compensation over four years, which the airline claims would make its flight attendants among the best compensated in Canada. However, the union countered that the initial proposed 8% raise in the first year does not sufficiently address the challenges posed by inflation.
