Just two months after the launch of the Nintendo Switch 2, I found myself in a familiar scenario: battling the overwhelming feeling of FOMO (fear of missing out). Initially, I, like many gamers, believed that the Nintendo Switch 2 wasn’t a necessary purchase at this time. Typically, new consoles launch with minimal upgrades and lack a robust lineup of exclusive games. The Switch 2 is no exception, offering only a couple of must-play titles—namely, Mario Kart World and Donkey Kong Bananza—during its initial release window.
Despite my initial hesitations, I couldn’t resist the urge to buy the Switch 2. While the launch lineup may not be extensive, the availability of the console has recently improved, making it a more feasible purchase for US consumers. Nintendo's unique approach to game releases suggests a growing lineup of titles over time. So far, Mario Kart World has proven to be an exhilarating experience; the addition of 24 racers brings a level of chaos that is always welcome. The new Grand Prix format, where racers traverse multiple tracks, adds an exciting twist to the gameplay, and the Knockout Tour mode—where competitors are gradually eliminated—has been particularly enjoyable.
Donkey Kong Bananza offers its own thrills, presenting a fresh take on the franchise's platforming mechanics. Playing it right after Super Mario Odyssey has highlighted the contrasting styles of these two beloved games. Additionally, the enhancements made to original Nintendo Switch titles have made upgrading to the Switch 2 more appealing. My experience with Pokémon Scarlet was marred by performance issues on the original console, but the Switch 2 significantly improves the framerate, making exploration in Paldea a much smoother and more enjoyable experience.
While the quality of the games played a role in my decision, the primary reason I opted to purchase the Nintendo Switch 2 was its price. Although the Mario Kart World bundle comes with a hefty price tag of $500, I believe it might be at its lowest price for some time. Recent changes in tariff policies have created uncertainty in the gaming industry. New York University professor Joost van Dreunen noted that tariffs could impact not just console prices but everything associated with them. Following the announcement of tariffs coinciding with the Switch 2's showcase, Nintendo had to delay preorders and increase the prices of some accessories.
With tariffs on imports from countries such as Canada and Japan set to take effect, there are concerns about the rising costs of gaming consoles. Even if the tariffs do not directly affect the Switch 2, they contribute to an overall trend of increasing prices in the gaming market. For instance, the XBox Series X saw a $100 price hike this year, while the Xbox Series S increased by $80. Moreover, Sony has also raised the price of the PlayStation 5 globally. Given these trends, it raises the question: will the Nintendo Switch 2 also see a price increase in the future?
Ultimately, I had to weigh facts against speculation. I knew I would eventually buy a Switch 2, but with the potential for price increases looming, I decided to make the purchase now. These mental calculations led me to confirm my order for the shiny new console, and I have been enjoying it daily since. The Switch 2 has surprisingly replaced my Steam Deck as my go-to handheld device, a role the Deck had taken on after I upgraded from my OLED Switch two years ago.
I recognize that I am still in the honeymoon phase of ownership, and the novelty may wear off. However, for now, I am fully engaged in the gaming world with my new Switch 2, ready to enjoy all the adventures it has to offer—bananas to destroy and all!
