This week, Microsoft unveiled new Windows 11 preview builds that come with significant updates, particularly in the About section of the Settings app. This revamped section now offers users detailed information about the hardware components within their computers, making it easier for both novice and experienced users to understand their systems.
The latest iteration of the About section includes comprehensive spec cards that detail various hardware specifications. Additionally, Microsoft is developing a dedicated FAQ section aimed at helping users understand how their computer components impact overall performance. This feature was initially hinted at some time ago, but users can now access actual questions and answers directly within Settings > About.
While many seasoned PC users may already be familiar with the information provided, newcomers to the Windows ecosystem will find this content highly beneficial. Currently, users have identified a range of questions included in the FAQ, such as:
Am I running the latest version of the Windows OS? What is the latest Windows version? How does having 4-8 GB of RAM impact my PC’s performance? Can I run modern applications smoothly with this RAM capacity? What is a GPU? I don’t have a dedicated GPU. How does its absence impact gaming and graphics performance? Is my GPU sufficient for high-end gaming and video experience? How can having a dedicated GPU enhance my experience and productivity? It's important to note that the list of available questions in the FAQ section varies based on users' specific hardware configurations. For instance, users equipped with integrated graphics will see inquiries regarding the absence of a discrete graphics card. Similarly, questions related to system memory will depend on the amount of RAM installed in the PC. Interestingly, even those with less than 4GB of RAM are catered to, as Microsoft has included tailored responses for users with very low-end computers.
While the answers provided about RAM and GPU usage are largely accurate, one notable oddity is the question regarding the latest Windows version. The response simply states that Windows 11 is the newest release, failing to specify particular versions like 24H2 or 23H2. Given that each Windows 11 release has its own lifecycle, spanning 18 months for regular customers, it would be beneficial for Microsoft to clarify this in the FAQ section.
If you’re eager to try out the updated About page in the Windows Settings app, here’s how to do it:
Ensure you are running build 26120.3576 or 22635.5090. Download ViveTool from GitHub and unpack the files into a folder that's easy to find. Run Command Prompt as Administrator. Navigate to the folder containing the ViveTool files using the CD command. For example, if you placed ViveTool in C:\Vive, type CD C:\Vive. Type vivetool /enable /id:55305888 and press Enter. Restart your computer. What are your thoughts on these updates? Share your feedback as Microsoft continues to enhance the Windows 11 experience for all users.
