Nintendo Switch 2 Pre-Orders Now Available in the US and Canada

After what felt like a long wait, Nintendo Switch 2 pre-orders have officially opened in the United States and Canada. On April 24, Nintendo launched the pre-order process following an earlier announcement that was retracted due to tariff complications, which initially set an April 9 pre-order date. The highly anticipated Nintendo Switch 2 is still scheduled for release on June 5, and those who registered their interest on Nintendo’s official website should have received an email granting them access to place their order.

If you registered but haven't received an email, you're not alone. Nintendo has updated its pre-order page, indicating that some customers may not receive their pre-order email until after the console's June 5 launch date. In addition to Nintendo’s website, third-party retailers such as GameStop, Walmart, Best Buy, and Target have also opened pre-orders for the Switch 2. However, as of now, the console and its bundled versions are largely sold out or listed as unavailable at most locations.

How to Pre-Order the Nintendo Switch 2

On April 24, both Nintendo and major retailers like Best Buy, GameStop, Walmart, and Target began accepting pre-orders, as originally scheduled. Best Buy, Walmart, and Target opened their pre-orders at midnight, while GameStop started its online and in-store pre-orders at 11 AM. Unfortunately, all of these retailers have either sold out of their initial stock or are currently listing the console as "coming soon."

While we anticipate that the Switch 2 will also be available on Amazon, the product links are not yet live. If you haven't already signed up on Nintendo's website, we recommend doing so. Registration is free, and you will eventually receive an email that allows you to place your order, even if it may be after the June 5 launch date. We will keep this post updated with the latest information regarding Switch 2 pre-orders.

The Nintendo Switch 2 is available for $450, with a special Mario Kart World bundle priced at $500. Check with your preferred retailers for availability, as many have quickly sold out.

What to Expect from the Nintendo Switch 2

The teaser trailer for the Switch 2 revealed that Nintendo's new hardware is larger, featuring an innovative design for the detachable Joy-Cons. The new Joy-Con 2 includes a C button, mouse controls, and a built-in gyroscope for tilt control. This console also comes equipped with a built-in microphone that supports a new feature called Game Chat, allowing in-game communication with friends.

The Switch 2 boasts a 7.9-inch LCD screen with a 120Hz refresh rate, HDR, and 1080p resolution. When docked, players can enjoy gaming in up to 4K resolution on their TVs. Nintendo has also enhanced the internal speakers of the console. The new dock features a built-in fan to help maintain performance during extended gaming sessions and includes dual USB-C ports for charging.

Additionally, the base storage has increased to 256GB, which can be expanded using compatible microSD Express cards. This upgrade ensures ample space for gaming and media consumption.

Understanding Tariffs Affecting the Nintendo Switch 2

During its latest Direct presentation in early April, Nintendo provided more details about the Switch 2, including the original pre-order date and the $450 starting price. However, shortly afterward, President Trump announced significant tariffs on imports from China and other countries, leading Nintendo to delay pre-orders in the US and Canada.

In a surprising turn, President Trump later announced a 90-day pause on steep “reciprocal” tariffs affecting 75 countries, though tariffs on China increased to 245 percent. As a result, Nintendo has confirmed that the original $450 price for the Switch 2 will remain in effect for both the US and Canada, but they have left room for potential price adjustments in the future. It's worth noting that Nintendo began relocating some of its Switch console manufacturing to Vietnam in 2019, where tariffs are currently set at 10 percent during the pause period.
