The recent tensions surrounding Israel's attack on Iran have sparked significant speculation regarding the potential involvement of the United States in efforts to dismantle Iran's nuclear capabilities. One of the few military assets capable of effectively damaging the Fordo facility and its advanced centrifuges is the GBU-57 A/B Massive Ordnance Penetrator, commonly referred to as a bunker buster. This impressive weapon measures 20 feet in length, weighs approximately 30,000 pounds, and boasts the capability to penetrate up to 200 feet underground before detonation.
Retired Colonel Steve Ganyard, an ABC News contributor, emphasized that the GBU-57 was specifically engineered for targets like those in Iran, where facilities are heavily fortified below ground. "You save them for places like Iran and North Korea because under normal circumstances, you wouldn’t require such deep penetration," he remarked.
Interestingly, the GBU-57 contains only 5,000 pounds of explosives designed to explode upon reaching its subterranean target. Ganyard clarified that, while the bomb would create some ground debris, it would not produce a massive explosion. "It would penetrate the ground and shoot up some debris but it won’t be a massive cloud," he explained.
Notably, no other military force, including Israel, possesses the GBU-57 or the delivery system capable of deploying this enormous bomb. The B-2 Spirit stealth bomber, which can carry two of these bunker busters, is exclusively operated by the U.S. Air Force. Currently stationed at Whiteman Air Force Base in Missouri, these bombers would require approximately 15 hours to reach Iran if ordered to deploy, according to military experts.
Ganyard also pointed out that the stealth capabilities of the B-2 would likely be irrelevant in a hypothetical mission to strike Iran's underground facilities, as Israel's military has reportedly compromised a significant portion of Iran's air defense systems.
In response to Israel's assertions regarding its nuclear ambitions, Iranian officials have categorically dismissed these claims, asserting that they are unfounded. Meanwhile, former President Donald Trump has issued stern warnings to Iranian leaders concerning their alleged efforts to develop nuclear weapons.
