Democratic Rep. Gerry Connolly of Virginia has sadly passed away at the age of 75, according to a heartfelt statement released by his family. The announcement came early Wednesday morning, revealing that he died peacefully at his home, surrounded by loved ones. “It is with immense sadness that we share that our devoted and loving father, husband, brother, friend, and public servant, Congressman Gerald E. Connolly, passed away peacefully at his home this morning surrounded by family,” the statement read.
Just last month, Connolly made headlines by announcing his decision not to seek reelection and his intention to step down from his leadership role on the influential House Oversight Committee. At that time, he revealed that his esophageal cancer had returned, a diagnosis he initially shared in November. “When I announced my diagnosis six months ago, I promised transparency," Connolly stated. "After grueling treatments, we’ve learned that the cancer, while initially beaten back, has now returned. I’ll do everything possible to continue to represent you and thank you for your grace,” he expressed in a statement.
Gerry Connolly served as a congressman representing Virginia’s 11th district, which encompasses parts of northern Virginia, since 2009. Prior to his congressional career, he dedicated 14 years to the Fairfax County Board of Supervisors. His family’s statement on Wednesday emphasized his commitment to public service: “Gerry lived his life to give back to others and make our community better. He looked out for the disadvantaged and voiceless. He always stood up for what is right and just.”
Members of Congress and friends have expressed their sorrow over Connolly’s passing, honoring his legacy as a “fierce champion” for the people. House Minority Leader Hakeem Jeffries remarked, “Even as he battled a difficult cancer diagnosis, Ranking Member Connolly continued to push back against the unprecedented attacks on federal workers in his district and across the country.” He extended his prayers to Connolly’s family and his dedicated staff, who he considered family.
Democratic Rep. Jamie Raskin of Maryland also shared his grief, stating, “Crushingly sad to learn of the passing of Gerry Connolly, my friend, colleague, and fierce champion of federal workers, public integrity, and the people of Virginia. May his memory be a blessing to us all.”
Connolly was the ranking Democratic member of the House Committee on Oversight and Government Reform and played a vital role in government investments with federal contractors, a key aspect of the local economy he represented. He was a vocal critic of former President Donald Trump, voting to impeach him during his first term and condemning his rhetoric against immigrants.
Additionally, Connolly was influential in directing international policy, serving on subcommittees focused on Asia and the Middle East. In November 2020, he was elected president of the NATO Parliamentary Assembly, where he concentrated on strengthening the United States’ presence within NATO. He had previously criticized Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu's government, emphasizing the need for the U.S. to reconsider military support for nations that do not adhere to the laws of war.
Gerry Connolly’s passing is a significant loss for his community and the nation. His dedication to public service and advocacy for the underprivileged will be remembered by many.
