Carney's cabinet includes notable appointments such as Melanie Joly, who transitions from the role of Foreign Affairs Minister to Industry Minister, and Anita Anand, who takes over Foreign Affairs. Chrystia Freeland retains her position as Minister of Transport and Internal Trade, while former Goldman Sachs banker Tim Hodgson steps in as the new Minister of Natural Resources. According to Cameron Anderson, a political science professor at Western University, it was crucial for Carney to staff key portfolios with experienced individuals to strengthen the Canada-U.S. relationship.
As part of his administration's agenda, Carney has vowed to implement a tax cut and eliminate trade barriers among the ten provinces by July 1. His ambitious platform aims for an additional spending of approximately C$130 billion (around $93.20 billion) over the next four years, predicting a deficit of C$62.3 billion by the fiscal year 2025-26, significantly higher than the C$42.2 billion forecast made in December.
The Canadian Chamber of Commerce's policy chief, Matthew Holmes, expressed eagerness to collaborate with Carney’s government on urgent nation-building goals, particularly emphasizing the need for regulatory reform and trade diversification.
In a controversial move, Carney abolished the position of labor minister, replacing it with a secretary of state for labor. This decision raised eyebrows, with Christopher Monette from the Teamsters union stating it suggests the government may be underestimating the challenges facing Canadian workers. The previous government had to navigate significant labor disputes, including strikes by port, railway, and postal workers.
In the recent election, Carney's Liberal Party fell just two seats short of a majority in the House of Commons. The opposition Conservatives, who had previously led in the polls, saw a decline in support after Trump’s tariffs and remarks about Canada. Conservative leader Pierre Poilievre criticized Carney’s cabinet appointments as a continuation of the previous administration, stating, “It’s more of the same when Canada needs real change.”
