SAN DIEGO – In a significant statement today, Governor Gavin Newsom expressed his concerns regarding public safety during a live fire demonstration scheduled at Camp Pendleton. This event, confirmed by the federal government early Saturday, has raised alarms among state and local authorities. Governor Newsom stated, “The President is putting his ego over responsibility with this disregard for public safety. Firing live rounds over a busy highway isn’t just wrong — it’s dangerous.”
Governor Newsom criticized the use of military exercises as a means to intimidate dissenters, calling it a reckless act that undermines the responsibilities of the presidential office. He noted, “In California, we are proud to honor our military and the sacrifices they continue to make for our country.” This statement comes as the nation prepares to recognize the 250th anniversary of the Armed Forces, prompting a reflection on the principles established by the founding fathers of the United States.
Recently, the state received notification from the White House about a major event planned for October 17 and 18 at Camp Pendleton, which involved firing live artillery rounds over the I-5 freeway. Governor Newsom condemned this “absurd show of force,” emphasizing the potential risks associated with such actions.
On Thursday, October 16, the U.S. Marine Corps confirmed that their exercise would occur on training ranges, which is standard protocol, but clarified that no live fire would take place over the freeway. However, on the same day, the federal government also directed the cancellation of train services that run parallel to the I-5 in anticipation of the event.
On Friday, event organizers requested that CalTrans post signage along the I-5 freeway warning of “Overhead fire in progress.” State officials near Camp Pendleton observed live munitions being fired, indicating a practice run for the upcoming demonstration. Early Saturday morning, after further inquiries, the state was informed that live fire activities were now scheduled for 1:30 PM that day.
Due to the extreme life safety risks and potential distractions for drivers, including loud explosions, a section of the I-5 will be temporarily closed on Saturday, October 18. This decision was made following recommendations from traffic safety experts at the California Highway Patrol. The I-5 freeway is a crucial artery for Southern California’s economy, facilitating the travel of over 80,000 individuals and moving approximately $94 million in freight daily between San Diego and Orange Counties.
Just north of Oceanside, more than 65,000 vehicles cross county lines every day, with half of those trips made for work purposes. This disruption could result in an estimated loss of $8.2 million in daily visitor spending. Additionally, thousands of truck shipments rely on uninterrupted access to the I-5, highlighting the broader implications of this live fire demonstration.
