Newsom acknowledged the candid nature of the discussion, stating, “People talk about it and you’d be lying if you haven’t thought about it, processed it.” He emphasized that his current focus is on his initiative, Proposition 50, while expressing concerns about the integrity of future elections, saying, “there might not be a 2028 election that’s free and fair.”
As Governor Newsom prepares to exit office in January 2027 due to term limits, he clarified that while he hasn’t seriously contemplated a presidential run, the conversations surrounding it have become more frequent. Historically, Newsom had shown “sub-zero” interest in a presidential bid, despite efforts to enhance his national profile. However, he remarked, “everything has changed,” indicating a shift in his political outlook.
Pointing to significant national developments, such as the President's decision to deploy the National Guard in Los Angeles, Newsom articulated that the political landscape has undergone a radical transformation. “I just think we’re on the other side of something radically different, not marginally different,” he stated, highlighting a newfound clarity in his mindset and focus.
A presidential campaign would require Newsom to confront certain image challenges, particularly the perception among some Democrats that he embodies the persona of a “San Francisco liberal.” To counter these misconceptions, he plans to publish a book next year, which will address the narrative surrounding his upbringing. Newsom, who was raised by a single mother juggling multiple jobs, insisted, “It’s quite the contrary” to the belief that he was born into wealth and privilege. “I’m going to be pushing back in that respect,” he added.
As the midterm elections approach, California is facing a critical decision regarding Proposition 50. This ballot measure aims to make five Republican-held House seats in California more favorable for Democrats. Newsom has been vocal about the Department of Justice’s decision to send election monitors to six counties ahead of the November 4 vote, labeling it as an intimidation tactic aimed at suppressing voter turnout. “They’re doing it as part of an intimidation strategy,” he criticized.
In response to critiques from former California Republican Governor Arnold Schwarzenegger, who expressed skepticism about Democrats relinquishing control over newly drawn districts, Newsom defended Proposition 50. He described the measure as “temporary, transparent, and democratic,” asserting that its passage would enhance the Democratic Party's position in upcoming elections.
Governor Newsom expressed confidence that the successful implementation of Proposition 50, along with victories in the New Jersey and Virginia gubernatorial races, would signify a rejuvenation for the Democratic Party. “The narrative is going to shift: Democrats are finally now no longer on their back heels, they’re on their toes,” he declared. He suggested that Padilla would make an “outstanding governor” if he decided to run in the 2026 governor’s race. The primary has recently been affected by controversies surrounding former Representative Katie Porter, who faced backlash for her conduct in interviews. Newsom reached out to Porter, advocating for compassion, stating, “We all have a bad day.”
