Brazil's ex-President Jair Bolsonaro faces legal turmoil as police raid his home, impose an ankle monitor, and fear he may flee amid ongoing election-related trials.

Federal police have conducted a significant raid on the residence and headquarters of former Brazilian President Jair Bolsonaro. This operation comes amid growing concerns that Bolsonaro may attempt to flee the country as he faces serious legal challenges. On Friday, Brazilian police announced that they had executed search warrants issued by the country's Supreme Court, although they did not initially name Bolsonaro in their statements. Bolsonaro served as the president of Latin America’s largest country from 2019 to 2022.

The Supreme Court of Brazil later confirmed the details of the raid, with the country’s prosecutor general indicating a “concrete” possibility of Bolsonaro evading justice. Bolsonaro is currently undergoing trial for alleged efforts to overturn the election victory of President Luiz Inacio Lula da Silva in January 2023. As part of the court's orders, Bolsonaro is now required to wear an ankle monitor, cease his social media activities, and cut ties with any foreign officials. Additionally, he has been prohibited from approaching foreign embassies or consulates located in Brazil.

In a statement from the top court, it was revealed that Brazilian police have accused Bolsonaro of collaborating with his son, Eduardo Bolsonaro, who is a Brazilian lawmaker. Eduardo has been actively lobbying in Washington, D.C., with the intent to persuade the administration of former U.S. President Donald Trump to impose sanctions on Brazil. This allegation surfaced following Trump’s recent threats of imposing 50 percent tariffs on Brazilian goods unless Bolsonaro is granted legal reprieve.

Reacting to the recent developments, Bolsonaro’s legal team expressed their “surprise and indignation” regarding what they perceive as “severe precautionary measures” against him. They stated that Bolsonaro has complied with all court orders up to this point. Eduardo Bolsonaro, utilizing social media, claimed that these legal actions are retaliatory measures following a video his father posted on Thursday, where he expressed gratitude to Trump for his support.

In comments to the media on Friday, the elder Bolsonaro categorically denied any intentions of fleeing the country, asserting, “The goal is supreme humiliation.” This statement reflects the intense scrutiny and pressure surrounding his current legal battles.

Trump's Tariff Threats

In a post on Truth Social last week, Trump voiced his support for Bolsonaro, claiming that Brazilian authorities have relentlessly pursued him for an extended period. “He is not guilty of anything, except having fought for THE PEOPLE,” Trump remarked, emphasizing his belief in Bolsonaro’s innocence.

Brazil’s Prosecutor-General, Paulo Gonet, has presented a 517-page document calling for Bolsonaro’s conviction for his purported crimes, which could lead to the former leader serving decades in prison. Gonet stated, “The evidence is clear: the defendant acted systematically, throughout his mandate and after his defeat at the polls, to incite insurrection and the destabilisation of the democratic rule of law,” underscoring the seriousness of the charges against Bolsonaro.

It is noteworthy that Trump himself is facing four criminal indictments stemming from his first term, including one related to efforts to overturn the 2020 election results. Similar to Bolsonaro, Trump has repeatedly claimed that he is the target of a political “witch hunt.” The pressure from the U.S. comes as Trump continues to threaten broad reciprocal tariffs on various trade partners, with the threats against Brazil being particularly personal in nature.

Trump has maintained a close relationship with Bolsonaro, often referred to as the “Trump of the Tropics.” This camaraderie dates back to Trump’s first term in office from 2017 to 2021. In response to Trump’s tariff threats, President Lula expressed that such actions lack “logic.” He stated, “We cannot have President Trump forgetting that he was elected to govern the US, not to be the emperor of the world.” Lula emphasized that Bolsonaro is not “being judged personally” but rather “being judged by the acts he tried to organise a coup d’etat,” highlighting the gravity of the allegations against the former president.
