On Wednesday, Rep. Kristin Bahner of Maple Grove publicly confirmed that she was among the four DFL lawmakers targeted by the alleged assassin, Vance Boelter. In a heartfelt written statement, Bahner expressed the overwhelming sense of grief and fear that has enveloped her life in recent days. “This senseless violence came to my door as well, placing me and my family in harm’s way,” she said. “I do not know why this man was filled with such hatred that he would come to my door; divine intervention led my family to change our plans keeping us safe.”
Rep. Bahner took the opportunity to extend her gratitude to law enforcement for their swift actions in guarding her family's home and apprehending Boelter. She also expressed her appreciation for her neighbors, who have been vigilant in watching over her family during this troubling time.
As previously reported, Vance Boelter is alleged to have shot and killed Melissa and Mark Hortman at their Brooklyn Park home early Saturday morning. This tragic event has deeply affected Bahner, who stated, “I am devastated by the loss of my leader, mentor, and friend, Melissa, and her husband Mark.” She went on to highlight her admiration for Melissa, saying, “I would walk through fire to follow Melissa. She was strong and steadfast; she believed in cutting through to the essence of what was important.” Bahner emphasized that Melissa never wavered from prioritizing the needs of the people of Minnesota in her work.
In her emotional tribute, Bahner expressed her gratitude to Mark and Melissa’s children for sharing their parents with the community through public service. She acknowledged the immense grief and sorrow the family is experiencing, offering her thoughts and prayers as a source of solace and comfort during this painful time.
Rep. Bahner also conveyed her concern for the Hoffman family, specifically Sen. John Hoffman and his wife Yvette, who were shot at their home in Champlin as part of Boelter’s targeted attacks. She noted, “We will not let fear or division win. Melissa has set a high bar, placing the work in our hands to make the world a better place.”
Sen. Ann Rest also released a statement, revealing that Boelter was found parked outside her home in New Hope on the same Saturday, adding to the growing list of targeted officials. The alarming nature of these attacks underscores the vulnerability of public officials and raises important discussions about safety and security.
The community continues to rally around the victims and their families, demonstrating solidarity in the face of such tragic events. As the investigation unfolds, the focus remains on supporting those affected and ensuring that justice is served.
