An incident occurred at State Farm Stadium, where an armed man allegedly impersonated a member of law enforcement during preparations for a memorial service for Charlie Kirk. The Arizona Department of Public Safety confirmed the arrest of 42-year-old Joshua Runkles, a resident of North Carolina, who was taken into custody on September 19.
At approximately 12 p.m., Runkles approached an officer assigned to a security detail at State Farm Stadium. According to court documents, he claimed to be in town when personnel from Turning Point USA contacted him for security assistance. Runkles asserted that he or his company was assigned to the event. However, the officer informed Runkles that he needed to coordinate with Turning Point USA, who would liaise with the Secret Service to verify his authorization to work security at the venue.
During the interaction, Runkles was asked for identification. He presented a badge from the Franklin County Sheriff's Office along with an Idaho law enforcement identification card. Additionally, he possessed a concealed carry permit. The officer informed him that he was not permitted to enter the stadium or carry a weapon on the premises. Runkles complied, demonstrating respect and cooperation throughout the discussion. He acknowledged the officer's requirements and agreed to contact Turning Point USA personnel for further clarification.
Approximately two hours later, members of the Secret Service spotted Runkles inside State Farm Stadium. He was subsequently taken into custody. Upon arrest, authorities discovered that he was carrying a loaded pistol, a revolver, and several knives. Runkles was booked into jail but was later released on bond.
In response to the incident, a spokesperson for Turning Point USA, Andrew Kolvet, provided a statement to clarify the situation. He emphasized that Runkles was involved in advance security for a known guest attending the memorial service. Kolvet stated, “We do not believe this person was attempting anything nefarious; however, the advance security was not coordinated properly with the TPUSA security team or the Secret Service. It is also important to note that this occurred before the site had been fully sealed and locked down. Every precaution is being taken to ensure everyone’s safety.”
The Secret Service is currently investigating the incident, focusing on the circumstances surrounding Runkles' presence at State Farm Stadium. The investigation aims to uncover how he managed to gain access and whether any protocols were breached.
