Despite a tumultuous week following an incident involving his wife, Scott Shriner, the bassist for Weezer, is still slated to perform at the upcoming Coachella music festival. A reliable source close to the band confirmed to Rolling Stone that Shriner remains committed to his performance, highlighting the resilience of the band amidst personal challenges.
The incident occurred on Tuesday afternoon, April 8, as reported by the Los Angeles Police Department. The police were responding to a request for backup from the California Highway Patrol, who were in pursuit of three suspects involved in misdemeanor hit-and-run incidents. These suspects had fled into a residential area in Eagle Rock, Los Angeles.
During the police operation, officers approached the backyard of a home where one of the suspects was last seen. Jillian Lauren Shriner, who was reportedly armed with a handgun, appeared in the yard of a nearby residence. According to the LAPD's news release, when officers instructed her to drop the weapon, she refused multiple times and pointed the gun at them, prompting a shootout. Tragically, she was struck by gunfire during the exchange and retreated back inside her home.
Detective Meghan Aguilar held a press conference on Wednesday, stating, “At that point, there were some commands given, multiple commands to drop the gun. Unfortunately, it did result in an officer-involved shooting.” Eventually, both Shriner and a babysitter exited the residence and surrendered to the authorities. She was subsequently transferred to a nearby hospital for treatment of a non-life-threatening gunshot wound.
Upon further investigation, police recovered a 9 mm handgun from her home. Jillian Lauren Shriner, a recognized author with two New York Times bestsellers to her name, was subsequently booked on attempted murder charges. Authorities allege that she fired her weapon at the officers prior to being shot. After her arraignment, she was released on a $1 million bail.
Despite the chaos surrounding Scott Shriner’s personal life, the band is determined to fulfill their obligation to perform at Coachella. Weezer is set to take the stage as they were recently added to the lineup, replacing FKA Twigs. As the saying goes, “the show must go on,” and the band remains focused on delivering an unforgettable performance for their fans.
Neither Weezer nor Scott Shriner has made any public statements regarding the incident involving his wife, but their dedication to the festival indicates a commitment to their music and fans during challenging times.
