EXCLUSIVE: Sources have informed Deadline that the highly anticipated Sony/Marvel Studios film, Spider-Man: Brand New Day, will temporarily halt production for a week following a mild concussion suffered by lead actor Tom Holland on set in London last Friday. Due to the nature of the injury, filming cannot proceed without him. Holland is currently recuperating, and production is scheduled to resume on September 29. Fortunately, this week-long pause is not expected to affect the movie's theatrical release date, which is set for July 31, 2026.
Holland was promptly taken to the hospital for examination after the accident, but he was not admitted. The concussion reportedly occurred during a stunt gone awry while filming at Pinewood Studios, located just outside London. Importantly, no other cast or crew members were injured during this incident. It’s worth noting that the accident did not take place at the film's other location in Glasgow, Scotland, as production has primarily been concentrated at Pinewood for most of September.
The sequel, Spider-Man: Brand New Day, is being directed by Destin Daniel Cretton, known for his work on Shang-Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings. The film has a strong production team, with Amy Pascal and Kevin Feige, head of Marvel Studios, returning as producers. Fans can also look forward to the return of Zendaya in her role as MJ. Additionally, new cast members Sadie Sink and Liza Colón-Zayas have joined the film in undisclosed roles, while Mark Ruffalo is expected to reprise his role as The Hulk from the Marvel Cinematic Universe.
The Holland-starring Spider-Man movies have proven to be an incredibly lucrative franchise for Sony, grossing a staggering $3.93 billion worldwide across three films since their debut in 2017. Thanks to Sony's ownership of the Marvel Spider-Man universe, Holland’s Spider-Man can appear in Disney’s Marvel Cinematic Universe titles, while characters from the MCU, such as Robert Downey Jr. as Iron Man and Benedict Cumberbatch’s Doctor Strange, have also appeared in Sony's Spider-Man films.
The last live-action Spider-Man installment, Spider-Man: No Way Home, holds the title of Sony’s highest-grossing film ever, amassing an impressive $2.05 billion at the global box office. Released during the latter stages of the COVID-19 pandemic in December 2021, it played a crucial role in bringing audiences back to theaters, opening to $260.1 million domestically, marking the second-best opening ever, and achieving $600.5 million in its global debut, the third-best in history.
