British comedian and actor Russell Brand was granted conditional bail during a court appearance on Friday, following charges of rape and sexual assault that were brought against him last month. The charges, announced by London’s Metropolitan Police, include one count of rape, one count of indecent assault, and one count of oral rape, along with two counts of sexual assault, all relating to allegations involving four separate women.
The alleged incidents reportedly occurred between 1999 and 2005. Russell Brand has categorically denied all allegations against him. The recent hearing at Westminster Magistrate’s Court in London provided further context regarding the serious nature of the charges Brand faces. During the brief court session, Brand confirmed his name, date of birth, and address while acknowledging his understanding of the bail conditions.
Brand is scheduled to appear at the Old Bailey court in London on May 30, where further legal proceedings will take place. When the charges were initially announced in April, the Metropolitan Police indicated that Brand resided in southern England. However, reports from British news agency PA Media suggest that he may currently be living in the United States.
The investigation into Brand began in September 2023, following allegations that emerged from a collaborative inquiry led by three media outlets: The Sunday Times, The Times, and Channel 4’s “Dispatches”. According to the Metropolitan Police, the allegations detail a series of incidents: one woman claims to have been raped in Bournemouth in 1999; another alleges she was indecently assaulted in Westminster in 2001; a third woman reported being orally raped and sexually assaulted in Westminster in 2004, and a fourth woman has alleged sexual assault occurring between 2004 and 2005, also in Westminster.
