Mark Volman, Influential Musician and Founding Member of The Turtles, Passes Away at 78

Mark Volman, a founding member of the iconic 1960s rock band The Turtles and renowned singer known as “Flo” of Flo & Eddie, has passed away at the age of 78. He died in Nashville, Tennessee, on Friday after a brief and sudden illness, leaving behind a rich legacy in the world of music.

Early Life and Musical Beginnings

Born in Los Angeles in 1947, Volman developed a passion for music at an early age. He graduated from Westchester High School in 1965 and soon after formed The Turtles with his friend Howard Kaylan. The original lineup included talented musicians such as lead guitarist Al Nichol, rhythm guitarist Jim Tucker, bassist Chuck Portz, and drummer Don Murray.

Hit Songs and Musical Legacy

The Turtles became known for their catchy pop hits, including the timeless classics “It Ain’t Me Babe,” “Elenore,” and their chart-topping song “Happy Together,” which reached No. 1 on the Billboard Hot 100. Volman's distinct vocal harmony contributed significantly to the band’s unique sound and widespread appeal. However, the group disbanded in 1970, paving the way for Volman and Kaylan to embark on a new musical journey as Flo & Eddie.

Collaboration and Innovation

As a dynamic duo, Flo & Eddie toured with the legendary Frank Zappa’s Mothers of Invention and lent their vocal talents to various artists. They are well-remembered for their contributions to T. Rex’s hit “Bang a Gong (Get It On)” and Bruce Springsteen’s “Hungry Heart.” Additionally, they made a significant impact in television, creating memorable music for children's series like “Strawberry Shortcake.”

Academic Pursuits and Teaching Career

In his late forties, Volman sought to further his education by completing his Bachelor’s Degree at Loyola Marymount University, graduating in 1997. He continued his academic journey, earning a Master of Fine Arts (M.F.A.) in 1999. Volman went on to share his extensive knowledge of the music industry by teaching music business courses at the college level, most notably at Belmont University in Nashville.

Health Challenges and Memoir Publication

In 2020, Mark Volman was diagnosed with Lewy body dementia, a progressive brain disorder that affects cognition and movement. Despite his diagnosis, he continued to perform during the early stages of his illness. In 2023, he bravely revealed his condition to the public and published his memoir, “Happy Forever: My Musical Adventures With The Turtles, Frank Zappa, T. Rex, Flo & Eddie, and More,” sharing his fascinating journey through the music industry.

Survived By Loved Ones

Mark Volman is survived by his significant other, Emily Volman, his ex-wife Pat Volman, their daughters Hallie Volman and Sarina Miller, as well as his brother Phil Volman. His contributions to music and his enduring spirit will be remembered by fans and fellow musicians alike.
