Rapper Tory Lanez has been hospitalized after suffering severe injuries from a stabbing incident in a California prison. The Canadian hip-hop artist was reportedly attacked by another inmate early Monday morning at the California Correctional Institution located in Tehachapi, approximately 75 miles (120 km) north of Los Angeles, according to prison officials.
The 32-year-old rapper, whose legal name is Daystar Peterson, was stabbed a total of 14 times, resulting in significant wounds across various parts of his body. A post on his Instagram account revealed that the injuries led to both of his lungs collapsing, highlighting the severity of the attack.
The attack occurred around 07:20 local time (15:20 GMT), as confirmed by Pedro Calderón Michel of the state's corrections department. Following the stabbing, prison staff immediately administered first aid before transporting Lanez to a local medical facility for further treatment. An investigation into the circumstances surrounding the stabbing is currently underway, though no details about the motive behind the attack have been disclosed.
Lanez was initially placed on a breathing apparatus due to the severity of his injuries but is reportedly now able to breathe independently. Despite being in pain, he remains in good spirits, expressing gratitude to God for his survival. His Instagram update indicated that he is able to talk normally and is thankful for the support he has received.
Lanez is currently serving a 10-year prison sentence for his conviction related to the shooting of fellow musician Megan Thee Stallion in 2020. The incident occurred after a pool party at reality star Kylie Jenner's mansion, where an argument between the two escalated. During the trial, Megan testified that Lanez shot at her feet while demanding she dance, leading to her needing surgery to remove bullet fragments.
Despite the gravity of the charges, Lanez has consistently maintained his innocence and refused to apologize for the incident. The case has generated significant controversy within the hip-hop community, with various artists, including 50 Cent and Iggy Azalea, publicly taking sides, and some even petitioning for leniency in his sentencing.
Before his conviction, Lanez had achieved considerable success in the music industry, with seven US top 10 albums over a span of seven years. Despite his current circumstances, he has hinted at the release of a new album from prison, titled Peterson, which has generated interest among fans and the media alike.
