Warner Bros. Pictures has officially unveiled the first trailer for the highly anticipated monster movie, “The Bride,” directed by Maggie Gyllenhaal. This captivating film features a remarkable cast, including Jessie Buckley and Christian Bale, and promises to bring a fresh twist to the classic Frankenstein narrative.
The official synopsis of “The Bride” reads: “A lonely Frankenstein travels to 1930s Chicago to seek the aid of a Dr. Euphronius in creating a companion for himself. The two reinvigorate a murdered young woman, and the Bride is born. She is beyond what either of them intended, igniting a combustible romance, the attention of the police, and a wild and radical social movement.” This intriguing storyline is inspired by the iconic works of James Whale’s “Bride of Frankenstein” and Mary Shelley’s original 1818 Frankenstein novel.
In this reimagined tale, Jessie Buckley takes on the titular role of the Bride, while Christian Bale portrays Frankenstein’s monster. The film also boasts an impressive lineup of talent, including Penélope Cruz as Myrna, Annette Bening, Peter Sarsgaard, Julianne Hough, and Jake Gyllenhaal. The creative team behind “The Bride” includes renowned professionals such as Lawrence Sher, the cinematographer from “Joker,” Sandy Powell, the costume designer from “Cinderella,” and Karen Murphy, the production designer from “Elvis.”
“The Bride” marks Maggie Gyllenhaal’s second directorial project, following her successful debut with “The Lost Daughter” in 2021. That film garnered three Academy Award nominations and featured performances by Buckley and Sarsgaard. Gyllenhaal's artistic vision is evident as she explores timeless themes of love, loss, and identity within the horror genre.
The film “The Bride” is one of several upcoming adaptations of the Frankenstein story. One notable project includes a version directed by Guillermo del Toro for Netflix, featuring Jacob Elordi, known for his roles in “Euphoria” and “Saltburn,” as the reanimated monster. Del Toro’s film also features a star-studded cast, including Oscar Isaac, Mia Goth, Lars Mikkelsen, David Bradley, Christian Convery, Charles Dance, and Christoph Waltz.
