The decision to move Willis into his own space was described by Heming Willis as “one of the hardest decisions” she has faced in her role as a caregiver.
Heming Willis explained that the move was essential to provide Bruce with a living environment that is safe, quiet, and accessible. She emphasized, “I knew, first and foremost, Bruce would want that for our daughters.” The couple has two daughters, aged 13 and 11, and Heming Willis is committed to ensuring that their home life is tailored to meet their needs, rather than solely Bruce’s.
The challenges of living with dementia have compelled Heming Willis and their daughters to significantly alter their lifestyle. One major concern was managing the potential for loud noises and chaotic situations to trigger agitation in Bruce. This worry led her to limit activities like playdates and sleepovers. “I didn’t know if parents would feel comfortable leaving their child at our home, so, again, not only was I isolated, I isolated our whole family,” she recounted. “You know, the girls were isolated too, and that was by design; I was doing that. It was a hard time. It was a really hard time.”
Despite the changes, Bruce Willis' new home is conveniently located near where Heming Willis and their daughters live. This proximity allows them to maintain regular contact, often enjoying meals together for breakfast and dinner. “It is a house that is filled with love and warmth and care and laughter,” Heming Willis stated, reflecting on the importance of family connections during this challenging period.
Bruce Willis was diagnosed with frontotemporal dementia two years ago. In the interview, Heming Willis revealed that while he is “still in really great overall” condition, his cognitive abilities are declining. “It’s just his brain that is failing him,” she acknowledged. She further explained that the family has adapted their communication style to accommodate his needs, saying, “The language is going, and you know, we’ve learned to adapt. And we have a way of communicating with him, which is just a different, a different way.”
