The official cause of death for Brandon Blackstock, the former talent manager and ex-husband of pop star and daytime television host Kelly Clarkson, has been disclosed by local authorities. On Monday, the Silver Bow County coroner announced that Blackstock passed away due to complications from melanoma, a severe form of skin cancer that he had been battling for the past three years. Blackstock, who was married to the American Idol winner from 2013 until their divorce in 2022, died on August 7 at the age of 48.
In a statement provided to The Hollywood Reporter, Silver Bow County Coroner Dan Hollos confirmed the details of Blackstock's passing, stating, “The cause of death was melanoma; the manner of death was natural.” Reports indicate that he died comfortably at home under hospice care, surrounded by family and friends.
Initially, Blackstock's death was made public by his management company, Starstruck, which was founded by his father. They shared a heartfelt message on their Instagram account: “Brandon bravely battled cancer for more than three years. He passed away peacefully and was surrounded by family. We thank you for your thoughts and prayers and ask everyone to respect the family’s privacy during this very difficult time.”
Following Blackstock's death, Kelly Clarkson informed her fans that she would be postponing her August dates for her Las Vegas residency. In her announcement, she mentioned that Blackstock had “been ill,” which necessitated her need to focus on their two children, River and Remy, whom they have been co-parenting since their separation. Clarkson expressed her regrets, stating, “While I normally keep my personal life private, this past year, my children’s father has been ill, and at this moment, I need to be fully present for them. I am sincerely sorry to everyone who bought tickets to the shows and I so appreciate your grace, kindness, and understanding.”
Brandon Blackstock and Kelly Clarkson first met in May 2006 during a rehearsal for the Academy of Country Music Awards. Their relationship blossomed into marriage, and together they welcomed two children. In addition to his children with Clarkson, Blackstock is also survived by two children from a previous marriage and one grandchild. His passing marks a significant moment for both his family and fans who admired his work in the entertainment industry.
