DETROIT, MI – Iconic musician Billy Joel has made the difficult decision to cancel his upcoming tour dates following a diagnosis of a brain disorder known as Normal Pressure Hydrocephalus (NPH). This announcement includes the highly anticipated concert scheduled in Michigan alongside Stevie Nicks. The cancellation was revealed on Friday, May 23, through a statement on Joel's official website.
According to Joel's website, the diagnosis of Normal Pressure Hydrocephalus has been exacerbated by recent concert performances, leading to significant issues with his hearing, vision, and balance. NPH is characterized by the buildup of cerebrospinal fluid within the skull, which can press on the brain. This condition predominantly affects individuals over the age of 65 and, while serious, is often treatable. In light of his condition, Joel has begun specific physical therapy and has been instructed by his doctors to refrain from performing until he has fully recovered.
As a result of this diagnosis, Joel has been compelled to cancel a total of 17 concerts scheduled through the end of 2025. This includes performances with notable artists such as Sting and Rod Stewart. Among the canceled events, Joel and Nicks were set to take the stage at Ford Field in Detroit on Saturday, November 15. This concert was initially slated for March but had to be postponed due to Joel's earlier surgery.
For those who hold tickets to the affected concerts, refunds will be automatically processed and returned to the original payment method used for the purchase. Joel's website emphasizes that refunds will be issued to the original purchaser, even if the tickets were subsequently transferred to another individual.
In his statement, Billy Joel expressed his heartfelt gratitude for the support from fans during this challenging time. He conveyed his disappointment at having to cancel the shows and thanked audiences for their understanding. “I’m sincerely sorry to disappoint our audience, and thank you for understanding,” he wrote on his website.
The last performance by Joel in Michigan took place at Comerica Park, home of the Detroit Tigers, on July 9, 2022. Meanwhile, Stevie Nicks recently performed in Grand Rapids last September and was also in Detroit in November 2023, showcasing her enduring appeal.
As Billy Joel embarks on his recovery journey, fans remain hopeful for his return to the stage once he has regained his health.
