The recent military operation by the Israel Defense Forces (IDF) has resulted in the recovery of the bodies of an IDF soldier and two civilians who tragically lost their lives during the Hamas-led attacks on October 7, 2023. On Saturday, the bodies recovered included those of civilians Ofra Keidar and Yonatan Samerano, along with Shay Levinson, an IDF soldier. Ofra Keidar, a 71-year-old resident of the kibbutz Be’eri community, was brutally killed by Hamas militants during the attack. Her body had been held in Gaza since that fateful day. According to statements from her kibbutz, Ofra was a dedicated wife and mother of three, whose life was tragically cut short. Her husband was also a victim of the same attack. The kibbutz shared poignant memories of Ofra, stating, “On that dark Saturday, Ofra went, as usual, for a walk in the fields she loved - and never returned.” They further emphasized her role as a leader in the community, inspiring others with her strength and resilience, leaving behind three children and seven grandchildren.
Yonatan Samerano, a 21-year-old from Tel Aviv, was another victim taken by Hamas militants after they assaulted the Nova music festival. His tragic demise adds to the growing list of casualties resulting from the conflict. In addition, Shay Levinson, a 19-year-old tank commander and dual German-Israeli national, was killed in combat on October 7, with his body later taken to Gaza. The joint statement by the ISA and IDF confirmed these details and highlighted the challenges faced during the conflict.
The Hostages and Missing Families Forum expressed their sentiments regarding the return of the bodies, stating: “Alongside the grief and pain, the return of their bodies provides some comfort to the families who have waited in agony, uncertainty, and doubt for 625 days.” This statement reflects the prolonged emotional struggle faced by the families of the victims, emphasizing the need for closure amid ongoing tensions.
Furthermore, the forum urged that the return of the remaining 50 hostages still in Gaza should be prioritized as Israel continues to navigate its conflict with Hamas and Iran. They stated, “Particularly against the backdrop of current military developments and the significant achievements in Iran, we want to emphasize that bringing back the remaining 50 hostages is the key to achieving complete Israeli victory.”
In light of these developments, Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu extended his “heartfelt condolences” to the families of Keidar, Samerano, and Levinson. He also took the opportunity to express gratitude towards the Israeli soldiers involved in the operation, acknowledging their efforts in what was described as a “successful operation.”
