On Thursday, state media reported a devastating incident involving a Soviet-era passenger plane that crashed in Russia’s far-eastern Amur region. Local officials indicated that nearly 50 individuals, including children, are feared dead following the disaster. The aircraft, an Antonov An-24, was on a regional flight en route from Khabarovsk to Blagoveshchensk and Tynda when it disappeared from radar around 1 p.m. local time (midnight ET).
The Russian Ministry of Emergency Situations shared information via a statement on Telegram, confirming that a search and rescue helicopter managed to locate the wreckage of the aircraft. The crash site was identified on a mountain slope approximately 10 miles (16 kilometers) from Tynda. Unfortunately, no survivors were observed from the air, and reports indicate that the plane caught fire upon impact.
According to the director of Tynda airport, the Antonov An-24 was attempting to land for the second time when the tragedy struck, having failed to touch down on its first approach. Additionally, the Far Eastern Transport Prosecutor’s Office noted that the aircraft lost contact with air traffic controllers just a few miles from Tynda airport. The emergency ministry is currently investigating the reasons behind the loss of communication.
The Russian government has responded promptly by establishing a special commission, which includes both federal and regional officials, to address the crash. The Interstate Aviation Committee has also initiated an investigation into the incident. Russian state news agency TASS reported that the crew did not send any distress signals prior to the crash, and weather conditions at the airport were reported to be suitable for flying.
According to preliminary data shared by Vasiliy Orlov, the governor of the Amur region, there were 43 passengers on board, which included five children, along with six crew members. Emergency officials have indicated that all individuals aboard the ill-fated flight are presumed dead. The area where the aircraft went down is described as remote and challenging to access, with swampy forests lacking proper roads.
In light of this tragedy, the Amur region has declared three days of mourning. A hotline has been established for the families of those on board, as well as for anyone affected by this tragic event. The flight was operated by Angara Airlines, a Russian airline based in Irkutsk, Siberia.
