In a shocking incident, three people have been injured in a shooting at New York City’s iconic Times Square. The incident occurred early Saturday morning when a 17-year-old suspect opened fire, prompting a swift response from the New York Police Department (NYPD).
The shooting took place around 1:20 AM on West 44th Street and 7th Avenue. According to an NYPD spokesperson, authorities are currently questioning one individual, who is being held in custody; however, as of now, no formal charges have been filed.
The victims include an 18-year-old woman who was grazed in the neck, a 19-year-old man who suffered a gunshot wound to his right foot, and a 65-year-old man who was shot in the left leg. All three individuals were promptly transported to Bellevue Hospital and are reported to be in stable condition.
According to police reports, the shooting stemmed from a verbal dispute between the shooter and one of the victims. Fortunately, the firearm used in the incident has been recovered, aiding the ongoing investigation.
Eyewitness accounts and video footage shared on social media depict scenes of chaos, with individuals fleeing the area while police surrounded a vehicle and tended to the injured on the ground.
This shooting incident takes place against the backdrop of a significant decline in gun crime across New York City. According to the NYPD Commissioner Jessica S. Tisch, the first seven months of 2025 marked the lowest number of shooting incidents in the city, which boasts a population of approximately 8.4 million residents. From January to July 2025, the city recorded only 412 shooting incidents, a historic low since the beginning of gun crime records.
As investigations continue, the NYPD is focused on ensuring the safety of both residents and tourists in one of the city's most visited locations.
