The Pacific Tsunami Warning Center (PTWC) has announced that the threat of tsunami waves on Russia's Kamchatka Peninsula has been eliminated following a series of five powerful earthquakes, the most significant of which registered a magnitude of 7.4. These seismic events occurred in the ocean nearby on Sunday, raising initial concerns about potential tsunami impacts.
The strongest earthquake struck at a depth of 20 kilometers (12 miles) and was located approximately 144 kilometers (89 miles) east of the city of Petropavlovsk-Kamchatsky, which is home to around 180,000 residents, as reported by the U.S. Geological Survey.
In the wake of the major quake, smaller yet significant aftershocks were recorded both before and after the initial tremor. According to Russian state media, local geologists indicated that over two dozen aftershocks had impacted the Kamchatka region, with their intensity gradually diminishing.
Initially, the PTWC warned of a potential tsunami threat, but this warning was later downgraded, and eventually, officials declared that the danger had passed. In conjunction with PTWC's assessment, Russia's Emergencies Ministry issued a tsunami warning following the largest earthquake, advising residents of coastal communities to remain clear of the shoreline.
In addition to the alerts issued in Russia, the U.S. National Tsunami Warning Center also placed Hawaii under a separate tsunami watch, which was lifted just a few hours later as the situation stabilized. Fortunately, there have been no immediate reports of casualties or damage related to these earthquakes.
The Emergencies Ministry reassured the public that there were no immediate plans for evacuations, and shortly after the initial alert, they confirmed that the danger had subsided. This event recalls historical precedents, such as the devastating 9.0 magnitude earthquake in Kamchatka on November 4, 1952, which, although it caused significant damage, resulted in no reported fatalities despite generating massive 9.1-meter (30-foot) waves in Hawaii.
