Xiaomi will officially unveil the YU7 this Thursday, a highly anticipated model that has the potential to significantly reshape China's electric SUV market. The event marks a pivotal moment for Xiaomi EV, the electric vehicle unit of the renowned smartphone giant, as it seeks to establish a strong foothold in the competitive electric vehicle sector.
The unveiling of the Xiaomi YU7 is scheduled for May 22 at 7 PM Beijing time during Xiaomi's strategic new product launch event. This event not only highlights the YU7 as Xiaomi's first SUV but also celebrates the company's 15th anniversary. Xiaomi EV made the announcement via Weibo, inviting enthusiasts to witness the dawn of a new era for the brand.
Alongside the YU7, the launch event will also showcase several other innovative products, including Xiaomi's first mobile System on a Chip (SoC), the Xring O1, the Xiaomi 15S Pro smartphone, and the Xiaomi 7 Ultra tablet. This multi-product launch emphasizes Xiaomi's commitment to expanding its ecosystem beyond smartphones and into the electric vehicle market.
Xiaomi EV has demonstrated impressive growth in recent months, delivering over 28,000 units in April alone. This achievement marks the seventh consecutive month that the company has surpassed 20,000 units in monthly deliveries. The launch of the YU7 comes on the heels of Xiaomi's successful release of its first model, the SU7, on March 28, 2024, which positions itself as a direct competitor to the Tesla Model 3.
Earlier this year, Xiaomi also introduced the SU7 Ultra, an electric sedan boasting an impressive maximum horsepower of 1,548 Ps. Despite entering the EV market later than some competitors, Xiaomi has quickly carved out a niche for itself, demonstrating robust sales figures and consumer interest.
The YU7 has been positioned as a competitor to the Tesla Model Y and is expected to launch in June or July 2025. Regulatory filings reveal that the YU7 measures 4,999 mm in length, 1,996 mm in width, and 1,600 mm in height, with a wheelbase of 3,000 mm. For context, the updated Model Y measures 4,797 mm in length, 1,920 mm in width, and 1,624 mm in height, featuring a wheelbase of 2,890 mm.
Despite its recent successes, Xiaomi EV faces substantial challenges, particularly following a tragic incident involving the SU7 that resulted in three fatalities in late March. Additionally, the company has encountered a wave of complaints regarding the quality of the SU7, which have been widely discussed on Chinese social media platforms. These issues have added pressure on the company as it prepares to launch the YU7 and solidify its presence in the electric vehicle market.
As the unveiling date approaches, all eyes will be on Xiaomi to see how the YU7 can impact the landscape of electric SUVs in China and whether it can help the brand overcome its current challenges.
