In an exciting announcement, WordPress is launching an early version of its latest AI development tool called Telex. This innovative tool was introduced by CEO Matt Mullenweg during the recent WordCamp US 2025 conference held in Portland. Mullenweg described Telex as a “V0 or Lovable” tool, a nod to popular “vibe coding” services that allow users to build software using prompt-based, AI-driven interfaces.
Telex is designed to enhance the user experience by allowing users to create Gutenberg blocks, which are essential components of a WordPress website. These blocks can include text, images, columns, and much more. During his keynote address, Mullenweg showcased how one developer utilized Telex to create a simple marketing animation, highlighting the tool's potential for creativity and functionality.
Currently, Telex is accessible on its dedicated domain, telex.automattic.ai, but is labeled as “experimental.” Users can interact with the service by typing in a prompt that specifies the type of content block they wish to produce. The output is provided as a .zip file, which can be easily installed as a plugin on any WordPress site or through WordPress Playground, a platform that allows users to run WordPress in a web browser without needing a separate host.
The launch of Telex follows an earlier announcement from WordPress regarding the formation of an AI team dedicated to developing AI products that align with the company's long-term vision. Early testers have indicated that while Telex shows promise, it still has some technical hurdles to overcome, as several test projects either failed or required additional modifications to function correctly. Mullenweg acknowledged that Telex is still in the prototype phase but expressed his optimism about the potential for AI to advance the mission of WordPress.
“When we think about democratized publishing, it’s core to WordPress’ mission to take complex tasks that previously required coding knowledge and make them accessible to everyone,” Mullenweg explained. He emphasized the importance of providing open-source solutions at low cost, ensuring that users have ownership and rights to the tools they use.
In addition to Telex, Mullenweg also presented a simpler AI tool that was developed during a brief session of Contributor Day. This tool serves as a WordPress help assistant within the browser, showcasing the versatility of AI in enhancing user support. He also highlighted his preferred AI browser, Perplexity’s Comet, which allows users to interact with WordPress through its interface.
Touching on the legal issues that have been surrounding WordPress for the past year, Mullenweg provided a brief update on the ongoing dispute with hosting provider WP Engine. He alleges that WP Engine is profiting from WordPress's efforts without contributing adequately. Mullenweg seeks to have WP Engine license the WordPress trademark, which he claims confuses customers about the company's relationship with WP Engine.
“The quick update is that it’s working its way through the legal system. We trust in the fairness of the courts,” Mullenweg stated. He noted that a settlement conference took place, but the CEO of WP Engine did not attend. “That’s my only comment on that whole rigmarole,” he concluded.
As WordPress continues to innovate with AI tools like Telex, the platform is poised to further its mission of democratizing publishing and making website creation accessible to everyone. With the ongoing development and potential of AI technologies, users can expect exciting advancements in the WordPress ecosystem in the near future.
