Following the highly anticipated release of the Pixel 9a, Google has shared intriguing details about the phone’s design process, particularly regarding the rear camera bump. The tech giant explored a variety of designs for this crucial component, showcasing a low-resolution image that highlights their design evolution. This study of the camera bump shape focused not only on aesthetics but also on the structural integrity required to withstand drops and impacts, ensuring that the Pixel 9a remains a durable choice for users.
The images presented reveal a meticulous design journey, with one of the final concepts appearing prominently in the center of the top row. Google ultimately decided on a pill-shaped camera bump that is minimally domed. Notably, the first design iteration reflects a bump that nearly spans the entire width of the device, resembling the earlier designs of the Pixel 9 and Pixel 9 Pro, albeit without the elevated structure. Some users may have preferred this design for its connection to the lineage of previous models.
The last image in the series features a vertical pill design that bears a resemblance to the square camera layout found on the iPhone. This design exploration demonstrates Google's commitment to innovation while retaining the distinctive characteristics of the Pixel brand.
“It’s its own device but still feels like a Pixel, and that was the goal. It belongs in the family!” explains Soniya Jobanputra, a product management director at Google responsible for Pixel devices. She further emphasizes that the Pixel 9a serves as more than just a smaller sibling to its premium counterparts; it embodies the essence of a family member that complements the flagship lineup.
In addition to design changes, Google has upgraded the display technology in the Pixel 9a. The switch to a thinner plastic OLED (pOLED) panel has created more internal space for the battery while allowing for a lower camera placement, effectively minimizing the bump without compromising on durability. Soniya notes, “It wasn’t our intention to deliver an even better display. We had a pretty awesome display with the Pixel 8a. But we were able to boost brightness and power efficiency by opting for a new pOLED panel.”
As a result of these advancements, the peak brightness of the display has increased from 2,000 to an impressive 2,700 nits, enhancing the overall viewing experience for users.
Google has also introduced an exciting new color option for the Pixel 9a. The Iris colorway is described as an update to the beloved purple hue from the Pixel 3a, which was a fan favorite. “At first glance, Iris can appear blue or purple. It feels calm yet confident, opinionated yet widely appealing, making it the perfect hero color for the new A-series,” Soniya explains.
Complementing the Pixel 9a is a unique case that allows users to “see the color inside” without needing to remove it. This design features a cutout that encompasses the camera and flash, showcasing the phone's aesthetic while providing essential protection.
Overall, the Pixel 9a reflects Google's dedication to combining innovative design with functional enhancements, ensuring that it meets the needs of both new and loyal Pixel users.
