Samsung's One UI skin offers users a quirky yet engaging interface that enhances the functionality of Samsung phones. If you are using one of Samsung’s latest devices, chances are you already have One UI 8 (based on Android 16) installed or are eagerly awaiting the update. Once you receive the update, it's essential to dive into your settings, explore the new options, and discover the full potential of your device. Many of the best One UI features are hidden within advanced settings or tucked away in easily overlooked toggles. To help you maximize your experience, we have compiled a checklist of our favorite and frequently used settings that you should definitely try out.
One of the features I access daily is the Samsung Edge panels. With updates to One UI 7 and One UI 8, these panels have become even more feature-rich. The Edge panels allow for quick access to your favorite apps and helpful tools that can significantly enhance your productivity. For instance, I regularly use the Smart Select tool, now referred to as AI Select, for quick edits to my screenshots. Additionally, I utilize it to access my flashlight as an alternative to the quick panel.
When it comes to work, I often add essential apps like Settings, Gallery, and Slack directly to my Edge panels. Although One UI 8 maintains the same Edge panel functionality, users migrating from older versions will notice some key differences, such as the visibility of the pencil icon and the transition from Smart Select to AI Select. If you find that the Edge panels feature isn't showing up, you may need to enable it first. To do so, navigate to Settings > Display and toggle on Edge panels.
The one-handed mode is an incredibly useful gesture, especially for those using larger displays like the Samsung Tab S11 or Samsung Z Fold 7. This mode allows for easier navigation with just one thumb. To enable this feature, go to Settings > Advanced Features and toggle on One-handed mode. Once activated, your display will shrink, making it easier to manage your device with one hand. To return to full-screen mode, simply tap outside the smaller display.
If you're learning a new language, using apps that switch the primary language can be immensely beneficial. While this is straightforward on computers, doing this on mobile devices can be tricky. Fortunately, One UI allows you to change the language for specific apps through the General management settings. This feature has been available since One UI 5 but remains hidden in plain sight, even on devices running One UI 8.
To access this feature, go to Settings > General management > App languages. While not every app and language is supported, it’s an excellent option for those wanting to immerse themselves in a new language.
One of the settings I have found invaluable is the battery protection toggle. This feature allows users to limit battery charging, which can significantly extend your smartphone's lifespan. Introduced in One UI 7 and carried over into One UI 8, this setting is often off by default. Limiting your phone's maximum charge can reduce stress and chemical aging on the lithium-ion battery.
To enable battery protection, go to Settings > Battery > Battery protection. You can set it to stop charging at 80%, 85%, or even 90%, depending on your lifestyle preferences. I recommend starting at the lowest setting and adjusting as necessary.

Instead of silencing all notifications or relying on Do Not Disturb mode, consider organizing notifications into notification categories. This feature is found in the advanced options under Settings > Notifications > Advanced settings. Once enabled, you can manage notification categories for each app.
For example, if you use Slack, you can customize your notifications to receive only the essential updates while muting less critical alerts like file uploads or ongoing calls. This setting is particularly useful for maintaining focus without missing out on vital communications.
The lock screen is another fantastic place to add shortcuts and widgets. You can display important information such as your calendar or weather forecast without needing to open individual apps. Before adding widgets, enable the tap-and-hold edit option by going to Settings > Lock screen and toggling on Touch and hold to edit.
After enabling this feature, tap and hold on your lock screen to access the Add widgets option. Choose the widget you want to display and customize it to suit your needs. This feature adds convenience and keeps essential information at your fingertips.
While One UI 8 may not be the most revolutionary update from Samsung, it still introduces a variety of features that are worth exploring, especially if you're interested in incorporating AI functionalities. For those seeking even more customization for their home and lock screens, the Good Lock app is an excellent tool. This app includes several modules like LockStar and ClockFace, which offer deeper customization options.
It’s important to note that since One UI 8 is relatively new, some modules, such as Home Up, may take time to become fully compatible with the latest update. However, exploring these features can help you tailor your Samsung experience to your liking.
