After nearly six decades of evolution, Shelby American has finally bestowed the coveted “R” badge on the iconic Super Snake. Unveiled during the prestigious Collector Car Week in Monterey, the 2026 Wide Body Super Snake-R prototype is not merely a showpiece. This car is engineered for exceptional performance, excelling in both straight-line speed and cornering capabilities.
The Super Snake has always been a symbol of power and performance, but the new Super Snake-R prototype elevates these attributes to an entirely new level. Starting with the robust 500-horsepower Ford Mustang Dark Horse, Shelby American has integrated a supercharger—comparable in size to a small barbecue grill—unlocking an astounding 850+ horsepower on 93 octane fuel. This incredible power is transmitted through either a Tremec TR-3160 six-speed manual transmission for enthusiasts or a 10-speed automatic for those who prefer to focus on the thrill of driving rather than gear-shifting.
What truly sets the Super Snake-R apart is its advanced handling capabilities. The “R” designation signifies a serious commitment to performance, especially when navigating tight curves. Shelby has equipped this prototype with a fully adjustable coil-over independent suspension, replacing traditional rubber bushings with metal spherical bearings. Additionally, a harness strut bar has been included to connect the rear shock towers, significantly enhancing rigidity. The car's stance has been widened to accommodate enormous 335-section Michelin tires, while a Shelby-specific chassis stiffening system ensures stability at high speeds. According to Vince LaViolette, the Vice President of Operations at Shelby, this is “the best handling prowess we’ve ever offered in the history of the car.”
Beyond performance, the wide body of the Super Snake-R is not merely for show; it plays a crucial role in functionality. The design incorporates carbon-fiber aero elements with integrated cooling upgrades, enhancing both aesthetics and performance. Shelby has also utilized magnesium alloys and additional carbon fiber in the construction to maintain a lightweight profile of just 4,004 pounds. Remarkably, this weight is only 116 pounds heavier than the base Dark Horse model, despite the significant increase in power and the addition of larger tires and upgraded brakes. This balance of strength and weight gives the Super Snake-R a sharper and more agile demeanor.
The latest iteration of the Super Snake is more than just the fastest model; it represents a monumental leap in handling and performance. The new suspension system provides a solid, connected, and poised driving experience, making the 2026 Shelby Super Snake-R not only the quickest Super Snake but also the first that can be confidently taken into corners without hesitation. This car is a testament to Shelby American's commitment to excellence in performance engineering.
