T-Mobile’s T-Satellite service was fully launched in July, providing satellite-based cellular connectivity for users in areas where traditional land-based cell towers are unavailable. This innovative add-on allows users to make calls, send texts, and access data for select applications, ensuring reliable communication even in remote locations. For most users, this service comes at a cost of $10 per month, applicable to both T-Mobile customers (with exemptions for premium plan users) and non-T-Mobile customers alike.
In critical situations, having access to emergency services is paramount. T-Mobile recognizes this need, which is why they have introduced T-911, a feature that enables users to text emergency services at no charge. This service is available to everyone, regardless of their carrier, allowing individuals to sign up and text 911 (along with additional numbers) without incurring any fees. This initiative fulfills T-Mobile’s commitment to provide satellite 911 access, initially announced during their “Trade-offs left the chat” live stream in June.
To utilize T-911, users must have a compatible device that does not already include built-in emergency services. Compatible models primarily include certain Motorola phones, Samsung devices, and T-Mobile’s own Revvl line. The Google Pixel 9a and iPhone 13 are also supported, as these smartphones offer satellite capabilities but are not integrated with Google’s SOS or Apple’s emergency SOS features. Once T-911 is activated, users can text not only 911 but also 988 for mental health support and 838255 for the Veterans Crisis Line. Additionally, texting 611 will connect you to T-Mobile support.
Enabling T-911 for T-Mobile customers is a straightforward process that can be completed through the T-Life app. Here’s how to do it:
Open the T-Life app on your device. Tap on "Manage" located at the bottom right corner. Scroll down and select the line you wish to add T-911 service to. Scroll to the bottom and tap “Manage add-ons and data.” Locate the section titled “Line-level services” and find the add-on named “T-Mobile Text to 911 via satellite.” Check the checkbox to enable the service. Scroll down and click “Submit,” followed by the confirmation button to finalize the order. If you already have the T-Satellite service active on your line, T-911 will be automatically included, so there’s no need for additional setup.
If you are not a T-Mobile customer, you can still access the T-911 service in a similar manner to how T-Satellite is added—through an eSIM. Users who already subscribe to T-Satellite do not need to take any further action, as their devices will automatically be able to text 911. To sign up for T-911 for free, visit T-Mobile’s website and complete the registration form. After confirming your phone number via a one-time PIN and performing a compatibility check using your IMEI number, you’ll be directed to a second form to enter your date of birth and address, and set up an account PIN. Follow the provided instructions to complete the account setup and install your eSIM.
The T-911 eSIM is designed for automatic operation in emergencies. If you find yourself in an area without land-based coverage, including competitor networks, the T-911 eSIM will connect automatically. On Android devices, a satellite icon will appear at the top of the screen where the signal bars are located. For the iPhone 13, users will see “LTE” displayed. When connected, the carrier name will read “T-Mobile TXT911,” indicating that you are ready to contact emergency services.
In addition to texting 911, users will also receive Wireless Emergency Alerts (WEA) for weather emergencies, amber alerts, and more. To utilize T-911, open your usual messaging app, enter the emergency number you wish to contact, compose your message, and hit send. Having a reliable method to reach emergency services is crucial, and with T-911, T-Mobile ensures that help is always within reach, no matter your location.
