A SpaceX rocket was involved in a significant incident on Wednesday night, resulting in a dramatic explosion that sent a fireball high into the sky. This event occurred around 11 p.m. at the test stand located at Starbase, SpaceX's launch site situated at the southern tip of Texas. The company reported that the Starship experienced a “major anomaly” while it was preparing for its tenth flight test.
In a statement shared on the social media platform X, SpaceX reassured the public, stating, “A safety clear area around the site was maintained throughout the operation and all personnel are safe and accounted for.” This statement highlights the company's commitment to safety during testing operations, even amidst unexpected incidents.
This explosion is the latest in a series of challenges faced by the Starship rockets. Earlier this year, on January 16, one of the massive rockets broke apart in what SpaceX described as a “rapid unscheduled disassembly.” This incident resulted in flaming debris scattering near the Caribbean, raising concerns about safety and operational reliability.
In March, another incident occurred when SpaceX lost contact with a Starship during a test flight on March 6. The spacecraft disintegrated mid-flight, with wreckage observed streaming over Florida. These back-to-back incidents have highlighted the challenges that SpaceX faces in its ambitious rocket development program.
On March 27, another 403-foot (123-meter) Starship rocket launched from Texas but faced severe issues during its flight. Although SpaceX intended to deploy a series of mock satellites, the mission was aborted when the door failed to open fully. This malfunction led to an uncontrolled spin, resulting in a crash landing in the Indian Ocean. Despite the setbacks, SpaceX CEO Elon Musk characterized the March launch as “a big improvement” and pledged a more rapid launch schedule, aiming for a Starship launch every three to four weeks for the upcoming flights.
Following the explosion on Wednesday night, SpaceX assured nearby communities that there were no hazards posed by the incident. The company has requested that individuals refrain from approaching the site while they coordinate with local officials to respond effectively to the explosion.
