WASHINGTON — On March 24, a SpaceX Falcon 9 rocket successfully launched the classified NROL-69 mission for the National Reconnaissance Office (NRO). This significant launch marks a pivotal step for the agency as it aims to establish the largest satellite network ever created for the U.S. government. The NROL-69 mission lifted off from Cape Canaveral Space Force Station in Florida at 1:48 p.m. Eastern Time, representing the first National Security Space Launch (NSSL) mission of 2025 and the inaugural NRO mission under SpaceX’s NSSL Phase 2 contract, which was awarded by the U.S. Space Force in August 2020.

The launch of the NROL-69 mission closely follows the NROL-57 mission, which also utilized a Falcon 9 rocket. The NROL-57 mission took place on March 21 from Vandenberg Space Force Base in California at 2:49 a.m. Eastern Time. This mission marked a significant milestone as it was the eighth launch supporting the NRO’s new proliferated architecture of small satellites.

In a statement, the NRO highlighted its recent accomplishments, noting, “Over the past two years, NRO has launched more than 150 satellites, creating the largest and most capable government constellation on orbit in our nation’s history.” The agency further emphasized that with this ongoing momentum, 2025 is poised to be another dynamic year, with approximately one dozen NRO launches planned.

Approximately half of these upcoming launches are intended to enhance the NRO’s proliferated satellite architecture, with additional deployments projected through 2029. This innovative imaging satellite constellation, developed in collaboration with SpaceX and Northrop Grumman, is strategically designed to bolster military operations and enhance the United States' capabilities in intelligence-gathering from space.

The NRO, renowned for its role in designing and operating classified U.S. government surveillance and intelligence satellites, has characterized this rapidly expanding satellite network as essential for modernizing the nation’s intelligence capabilities. With a focus on technological advancement and strategic deployment, the NRO continues to pave the way for enhanced national security through space innovation.
