In a significant safety alert, Segway has announced a recall of approximately 220,000 scooters sold throughout the United States. This recall is prompted by serious safety concerns related to a potential fall hazard that has led to numerous user injuries, including everything from minor bruises to severe bone fractures.
The U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission (CPSC) published a notice detailing the recall, highlighting that the folding mechanism in Segway's Ninebot Max G30P and Max G30LP KickScooters may fail during operation. This failure can cause the handlebars or stem of the scooters to unexpectedly fold, posing a risk of serious injuries to riders.
According to the recall notice issued on Thursday, Segway has already received 68 reports of incidents involving folding mechanism failures. Alarmingly, these reports include 20 injuries, with affected individuals suffering from abrasions, bruises, lacerations, and even broken bones. This alarming data underscores the importance of addressing this safety issue promptly.
Consumers who currently own the recalled scooters are strongly urged to stop using them immediately. To assist with this safety concern, Segway is providing a free maintenance kit to those affected. The kit includes essential tools along with step-by-step instructions designed to help users inspect and adjust the scooters' locking mechanism as necessary.
Segway advises that, “Over time, depending on riding conditions, the folding mechanism may require periodic checks and tightening.” Importantly, the company has clarified that this recall does not involve any returns or replacements of the scooters.
The Segway scooters involved in this recall were manufactured in China and Malaysia, and they were made available for purchase at various major retailers across the U.S., including Best Buy, Costco, Walmart, Target, and Sam’s Club. Additionally, these scooters were sold online through Segway's official website and on Amazon.com. The sales period for these scooters ranges from January 2020 to February 2025, with prices varying from $600 to $1,000.
For the safety of all riders, it is crucial to heed the recall notice and take immediate action if you own one of the affected models. By doing so, you can help prevent potential injuries and ensure a safer riding experience.
