Samsung may have inadvertently provided a sneak peek at its highly anticipated multifold device through the latest One UI 8 build update. Recent animations discovered by Android Authority offer insight into what the upcoming trifold Samsung flagship could look like, showcasing features such as the dual-hinge folding mechanism, display layout, camera arrangement, and the location of the NFC chip.
The device is rumored to be named the Galaxy G Fold, although Android Authority has indicated that it is referred to as the “Multifold 7” within the One UI 8 animation files. This aligns with Samsung's initial teaser at its Unpacked event in January, where they presented a basic illustration of a triple-screen phone that resonates with the design elements revealed in the leaked animations.
The leaked animations depict a three-panel device featuring a prominent triple-camera setup positioned on the rear, specifically on the right-hand panel when fully unfolded. Furthermore, these animations indicate that the NFC chip will be housed in this same panel. The central panel appears to function as the cover display, equipped with a front-facing camera that remains accessible even when the device is folded shut.
When the device is fully unfolded, the front-facing camera is located on the right side, which is the same panel that accommodates the rear triple-camera on its reverse side. One particular animation demonstrates how the device is likely to fold, revealing two differently-sized hinges. The left-hand display folds inward, suggesting that the right-hand display is designed to sandwich over the top, enhancing the device's compactness.
Another animation provides a critical warning for users: it advises against folding the right-hand panel first due to the camera module's placement, which could impede the display from folding flat. This design choice indicates that the left-hand display may be at risk of damage if it cannot fully fold without obstruction. This folding mechanism diverges from the Z-shaped design employed by the Huawei Mate XT Ultimate Design, which debuted last September as the first commercially available trifold phone.
The Mate XT offers a unique advantage, allowing users to operate one, two, or all three display panels simultaneously, thereby enhancing its versatility. However, this design compromises some protection, as it leaves parts of the panel exposed at all times, making it more susceptible to damage.
While these leaks provide an intriguing glimpse into Samsung's upcoming foldable device, it is essential to approach them with caution. There is still limited information available regarding the product's final design and features. We may receive more official details soon, as Samsung is expected to unveil this innovative device at its next Unpacked event on July 9th, where they will also likely introduce the latest generations of the Z Fold and Z Flip devices.
