A recent listing has unveiled that Samsung's upcoming foldable devices, the Galaxy Z Fold 7 and Galaxy Z Flip 7, are set to support the new Qi2 wireless charging standard. However, it's important to note that this may not be the version of Qi2 that users are hoping for. The Wireless Power Consortium (WPC) has published details about a new Samsung device that is compliant with the Qi 2.1.0 version, indicating its arrival is imminent.
The newly listed device carries the model number SM-D637U. At first glance, this designation appears unusual, as Samsung's model numbers usually adhere to a recognizable pattern. Nonetheless, it seems that this device is indeed among the forthcoming foldable smartphones from Samsung.
While the model number SM-D637U might not make sense on its own, it is worth noting that another model, SM-D617D, was previously referenced by the WPC in connection with the Galaxy Z Fold 5. Similarly, the WPC used SM-D269N for last year’s Galaxy Z Fold SE. The discrepancy in model numbers raises questions, but it is possible that Samsung is attempting to obscure details about its new devices ahead of their official launch.
Despite the confusion surrounding the model numbers, it is increasingly apparent that the Galaxy Z Fold 7 will be Samsung's first device to offer Qi2 support. However, it is crucial to clarify that this is unlikely to represent "proper" Qi2 support. Based on insights regarding Samsung's upcoming Galaxy S25 series and the anticipated slim profile of the Fold 7, it is more probable that this device will be classified as "Qi2 Ready." This means it has received certification to work with accessories that incorporate a magnetic ring for alignment with chargers, rather than having the magnets integrated into its frame.
The term “Qi2 Ready” was introduced earlier this year as part of the Qi 2.1.0 update that Samsung has registered for this device. Although it is not surprising that the Galaxy Z Fold 7 will feature some form of Qi2 support, it is noteworthy as one of the first foldable devices to do so. This development presents a welcome option for consumers amidst a growing market of foldables that often possess unconventional wireless charging capabilities.
Samsung is expected to officially announce the Galaxy Z Fold 7 and Galaxy Z Flip 7 in July. As the release date approaches, tech enthusiasts and potential buyers alike are keen to see how these innovative devices will integrate the Qi2 wireless charging technology and what additional features they will offer.
