Ever since Samsung first introduced its Galaxy AI suite of artificial intelligence features, users have experienced a wave of confusion regarding the duration of these free offerings. The tech giant has occasionally indicated that these features would be available free for a limited time. However, recent official communications have clarified that the free provision of Galaxy AI features will cease by the end of 2025.
In a recent statement to Android Police, Samsung has confirmed that all Galaxy AI features available “on your phone by default” will remain free indefinitely. This announcement is significant as it reassures users that the AI capabilities developed by Samsung will not transition to a pay-to-play model.
It is essential to note that Galaxy AI is divided into two main parts. The first segment consists of features developed independently by Samsung, such as Audio Eraser, Object Eraser, Note Assist, Generative Wallpapers, Live Translate, and Writing Assist. All these features are confirmed to be free and will remain so in the future.
The second segment includes capabilities powered by Google’s Gemini technology. While Samsung currently offers these Gemini features on its devices for free, the future of these functionalities is not entirely under Samsung’s control. Google may decide to introduce charges for these features at some point.
There appears to be some legal rationale behind Samsung's disclaimer regarding the free availability of Galaxy AI until a specified deadline. Implementing a paywall suddenly could lead to potential legal repercussions, which is likely why Samsung has taken a cautious approach.
Additionally, Samsung could expand the functionality of Galaxy AI by collaborating with other AI companies, such as Perplexity, with which it is reportedly in discussions. If such partnerships materialize, there may be a need to charge for new features. However, current users can take comfort in knowing that they will continue to have unrestricted access to Samsung's native AI features.
